Emergency Department Registered Nurse (RN)

This Emergency Department is a Level 2 trauma center, accommodating an average of 150-180 patients daily. The facility features a main Emergency Department with 33 beds, 8 beds designated for trauma/resuscitation, and 1 pod dedicated to behavioral health rooms that can be converted to medical use. The department consists of 5 pods, each containing 4 patient rooms and 1 hall bed.

There is also a vertical care area that can function as a waiting or holding area and can accommodate patients categorized as ESI 3 and ESI 4.

Registered Nurses are responsible for caring for a diverse range of patients, from neonates to geriatrics, including those with minor to critical conditions. Typical cases include:

• Sepsis
• Diabetic Keto acidosis (DKA)
• Respiratory illnesses
• Gastrointestinal bleeds requiring emergent blood products
• Heavy trauma incidents such as stab wounds, gunshot wounds, motor vehicle collisions, drownings, and falls
• Stroke patients (up to 24 hours post-symptoms)

Traveling nurses are also expected to assist with sexual assault cases and are responsible for evidence collection in collaboration with the team.

Patient Ratios:

• Registered Nurse: 1:4-5
• Licensed Practical Nurse: 1:4-5
• ED Technician: 1:10

Required Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

• Must have at least 2 years of emergency department nursing experience (excludes travel experience); candidates with 1.5 years of ED experience and 2 years in another nursing area may be considered with manager approval.
• Nurses must have completed a nursing education program approved by a board of nursing.

Certifications:

• Registered Nurse: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS, TNCC, and PALS required; CPI or MAB/MOAB preferred.
• Licenses Practical Nurse: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS, and PALS required; CPI or MAB/MOAB preferred.

Skills Required:

• Ability to conduct ESI assessments during triage and prioritize care effectively.
• Strong critical thinking skills to assess whether patients are critically ill.
• Effective communication and willingness to ask questions to ensure patient safety and quality care.
• Experience in treating all patient types mentioned above, with appropriate management approval for those with differing experiences.

Support and Resources:

• Each shift is supported by a lead technician and charge nurse, ensuring 24/7 coverage.
• Access to phlebotomy services and 24/7 radiology and pharmacy support.
• Charting is done through the EPIC system; familiarity is preferred.

Orientation and Scheduling:

New hires will undergo an 8-hour facility orientation, followed by 4 hours of ED-specific education and a minimum of 2 shifts within the unit. Scheduling varies, with shifts available throughout the day. While weekend work may be common, it depends on staffing needs.

Floating Opportunities:

Registered nurses may be required to float to inpatient medical/surgical, PCU, or ICU areas to assist with tasks within their scope of practice.
