Job Title:

NMR Chemist

Job Description

The NMR Chemist supports synthetic polymer characterization using NMR spectroscopy to enable new product research, product development, product registrations, manufacturing investigations, field issue resolution, and lifecycle management. This role focuses on daily sample preparation, NMR data acquisition, data interpretation, and accurate documentation of results, while contributing to a well-organized and safe laboratory environment.

Responsibilities

+ Prepare test articles and samples for NMR analysis, including more complex preparations beyond simple small-molecule mixtures when required.

+ Conduct NMR testing in accordance with validated test methods and experimental designs.

+ Document all testing activities in a laboratory notebook, ensuring clear, complete, and traceable records of methods, observations, and results.

+ File all documentation in alignment with standard operating procedures and enter test results into the laboratory information management system (LIMS).

+ Perform NMR analyses to evaluate polymer composition, impurity profiles, and to identify and quantify degradation products.

+ Support NMR characterizations related to extractables and leachables, manufacturing issues, field issues, and other chemical composition questions across the product lifecycle.

+ Analyze NMR data, interpret spectra, and summarize findings in a clear and concise manner.

+ Report results by compiling data, typically in spreadsheets, and ensure raw data are properly stored and filed.

+ Routinely monitor laboratory supply inventory and place orders through approved vendors to prevent shortages that could delay studies.

+ Perform monthly laboratory safety inspections and document findings in accordance with established instructions.

+ Maintain good laboratory housekeeping by regularly organizing work spaces, equipment, and materials.

+ Contribute to general lab duties, including organizing inventory and verifying adequate supplies to support daily operations.

Essential Skills

+ Hands-on experience with NMR spectroscopy, including at least three months of independently running and interpreting NMR spectra.

+ Demonstrated experience in sample preparation for NMR or related analytical techniques.

+ Proficiency in documenting experimental work and results in a laboratory notebook on a regular basis, in either academic or industrial settings.

+ Experience using Top Spin software for NMR data acquisition and processing.

+ Proficiency with Excel for organizing, analyzing, and reporting data.

+ Bachelor's degree (BS) in chemistry or a related field.

+ Foundational knowledge in chemistry, with a preference for chemical or organic chemistry background.

+ Ability to collect and interpret a substantial number of NMR spectra, demonstrating familiarity with routine data acquisition workflows.

+ Strong attention to detail and commitment to following validated test methods and standard operating procedures.

+ Ability to manage multiple tasks in a laboratory setting, including testing, documentation, and inventory-related activities.

Additional

Skills & Qualifications

+ Exposure to synthetic polymer NMR characterization or a strong interest in developing expertise in this area; on-the-job training will be provided for polymer NMR spectra and characterization.

+ Experience supporting technical report writing or authoring sections of technical reports, particularly related to analytical findings.

+

Experience with more complex sample preparation beyond small-molecule mixtures.

+ Familiarity with laboratory safety practices, including participation in safety inspections.

+ Interest in working across the full product lifecycle, from early research through field support.

+ Willingness to learn and adapt to new analytical methods, software tools, and laboratory processes.

Work Environment

This is an onsite laboratory-based role, working Monday through Friday. The position is considered essential, so the NMR Chemist will be present on-site regardless of broader site status. The NMR laboratory focuses on synthetic polymer NMR characterizations and supports a wide range of activities, including new product research, product development, product registrations, manufacturing troubleshooting, field issue investigations, and lifecycle management. The typical workweek involves daily sample preparation, NMR data collection using Top Spin, data analysis, data reporting primarily via spreadsheets, and thorough documentation of findings in a lab notebook.

The environment emphasizes strong safety practices, including monthly safety inspections, and requires regular housekeeping and organization of inventory to ensure adequate supplies. The role provides exposure to all phases of the product lifecycle and offers training in synthetic polymer NMR spectrometry within a structured, process-driven laboratory setting.
