TITLE
Victim Assistant Advocate I
JOB OBJECTIVESIncumbent is responsible for assisting victims of crime on the phone and in person.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS- Assisting and counseling crime victims in the Court of Common Pleas;
- Assisting Prosecutors in evaluating cases and victims for preparation of trial;
- Creating and maintaining notification files in the computer for victim notification of cases;
- Creating and modifying all correspondence with the parole board;
- Handling phone calls and walk-ins by providing necessary assistance, referrals, and information;
- Providing information, education, and referrals;
- Maintaining an on-call status 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
- Revising information for distribution;
- Ordering materials for distribution;
- Attending various meetings and training sessions;
- Assisting with public education;
- Assisting with professional training for outside professionals;
- Assisting with grants;
- Assisting in the interviewing and training process for employees and volunteers.
Performs related Essential and Non-Essential functions as needed.
EQUIPMENTIncumbent operates the following equipment: computer, scanner, smart phone, copier, and calculator.
CRITICAL SKILLS / EXPERTISE- Knowledge of the Criminal Justice System ORC Chapter 2930, Rules of Criminal Procedure, 'Marsy's Law' constitutional provisions;
- Must have at least two years prior Advocacy experience;
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
- Knowledge of community services;
- Knowledge of computers and related equipment;
- Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks;
- Knowledge of counseling and crisis intervention skills;
- Knowledge of stress management skills;
Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice, Sociology, Counseling, Social Work, or a related field is required, along with related experience. Incumbent must have a valid Ohio driver's license and attend Victim/Witness Assistance Program training.
DIFFICULTY OF WORKWork consists of complex, varied, non-standardized tasks requiring the application of numerous laws, rules, regulations, and procedures.
RESPONSIBILITYSupervisor reviews work when needed. Incumbent makes most decisions regarding work independently. Errors in work could result in a client being unaware of information that allows him/her to exercise his/her rights.
PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPSIncumbent has contact with co-workers, employees in the department, public and private sector employees, and the general public. The purpose of these contacts is to coordinate services, education, and training, and provide services for victims and witnesses.
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENTPhysical Requirements:
Incumbent performs sedentary work which may require lifting up to fifteen (15) pounds occasionally.
Physical Activity:
Incumbent performs the following physical activities: climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
Visual Activity:
Incumbent performs work where the seeing job is close to the eyes.
Incumbent works inside with no exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
