Correctional Officer Position

Come join the Wyoming Department of Corrections!! We are now hiring Correctional Officers for the Wyoming State Penitentiary in Rawlins, Wyoming. The Wyoming State Penitentiary (WSP) is a high-custody facility for the general population and administrative segregation housing. Short-term dormitory housing may be available for this facility while attending the WDOC academy. A Correctional Officer is essential for maintaining the institution's safety and security and is considered a Law Enforcement position, receiving the 20-year retirement and state benefits package.

To maintain institutional safety standards, the position requires the following:

  • Enforcement of rules and regulations.
  • Responding to post orders of varied assigned posts.
  • Supervising inmates in the performance of various jobs; modeling appropriate, pro-social behavior.
  • Assisting in a variety of searches, including checking for contraband items.
  • Observing daily inmate living, programming, work areas, and the perimeter fence line, reporting security violations.
  • Conducting daily scheduled counts of inmates.
  • Assuming duties of housing control centers, central control centers, and inmate living areas, monitoring inmate movements.
  • Becoming familiar with inmate names and characteristics for easier identification of inmate movements and infractions.
  • Assisting in restraining unruly inmates, utilizing the minimum amount of force required.
  • Assisting in transporting inmates within and off the institution's boundaries, including inter- and intra-state predetermined destinations.
  • Assisting in processing newly incarcerated inmates or the appropriate out-processing of released inmates.
  • Attending required training to perform duties at an acceptable level.

Preferences/Agency Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Must have a valid driver's license
  • Must not have a felony or domestic violence conviction.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of security measures, techniques, and precautions necessary to maintain a safe and secure institution.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education:

    High School Diploma or GED
  • Experience:

    0-1 year of progressive work experience in a Correctional Setting
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
    None

Physical

Working Conditions:

  • Candidates must successfully pass a background/reference check, medical and psychological evaluation, physical fitness exam, urinalysis drug screen, and other pre-employment testing before the appointment.
  • Candidates must have the ability to work overtime as required and the ability to work on any shift, holidays, and weekends.

The Wyoming Department of Corrections is a Drug-Free Workplace. Per WDOC policy, all staff are subject to drug testing while employed by WDOC. Successful applicants for employment must pass a criminal background/reference check, medical evaluation, and drug test prior to appointment.

Required:
