Come Join the Wyoming Department of Corrections! We are now hiring Correctional Officers for the Wyoming State Penitentiary in Rawlins, Wyoming. The Wyoming State Penitentiary (WSP) is a high-custody facility for the general population and administrative segregation housing. A short-term dormitory housing may be available for this facility while attending the WDOC academy. A Correctional Officer is essential for maintaining the institution's safety and security and is considered a Law Enforcement position, receiving a 20-year retirement and state benefits package.

- Enforcement of rules and regulations
- Responding to post orders of assigned posts
- Supervising inmates during job performance, modeling appropriate, pro-social behavior
- Assisting in various searches, including contraband checks
- Observing daily inmate living, programming, work areas, and perimeter fence line, reporting security violations
- Conducting daily scheduled counts of inmates
- Assuming duties of housing control centers, central control centers, and inmate living areas, monitoring inmate movements
- Familiarizing with inmate names and characteristics for easier identification of movements and infractions
- Assisting in restraining unruly inmates, utilizing minimum force required
- Assisting in transporting inmates within and off the institution's boundaries, including inter- and intra-state predetermined destinations
- Assisting in processing newly incarcerated inmates or the appropriate out-processing of released inmates
- Attending required training to perform duties at an acceptable level
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED
- 0–1 year of progressive work experience in a correctional setting
- No required certificates, licenses, or registrations
Agency Requirements:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must be a U.S. Citizen
- Must have a valid driver’s license
- Must not have a felony or domestic violence conviction
- Candidates must pass background/reference check, medical and psychological evaluation, physical fitness exam, urinalysis drug screen, and other pre-employment testing before appointment
- Candidates must be able to work overtime, any shift, holidays, and weekends
- FLSA:
Non-Exempt - Drug-free workplace – all staff are subject to drug testing while employed by WDOC
- Tobacco-free workplace – prohibits smoking materials, smokeless tobacco, or tobacco substitutes on or into WDOC facilities and grounds
- Dress code policy includes standards for facial hair, body art, and piercings/gauges; all applicants must meet these standards
- All successful candidates must complete an initial training period and obtain Correctional Officer Certification by the Wyoming Peace Officers Standards & Training (POST) Commission within one year of initial appointment
