Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Diesel Mechanic

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a Heavy Equipment Mechanic located in Rawlins, Wyoming. Under direct supervision, the Heavy Equipment Mechanic performs various maintenance and repair tasks with diesel and automotive equipment and vehicles, including diesel and gasoline engine overhauls and tune‑ups, brakes, steering, transmission, and hydraulic repair.
Essential Functions- Conduct preventive maintenance and repairs on automotive and heavy equipment.
- Perform safety inspections on all types of automotive components and heavy equipment vehicles.
- Read and interpret technical manuals to diagnose and correct problems on vehicles and equipment.
- Rig and fabricate new equipment to district standards.
- Create repair orders.
- Responsible for inventory of shop equipment and supplies.
- Design and fabricate parts for tractors, mowers, and machinery for specialized applications.
- Methods and techniques of automotive maintenance and repair.
- Electronic principles and diagnostic tools.
- Light and heavy‑duty automotive equipment and their parts (hydraulics, electrical, drive trains, after treatment, gas, and diesel engine overhauls).
- Grease and oil specifications.
- General servicing of equipment.
- Policies and safe work procedures.
Education & Experience Substitution: 2‑4 years of progressive work experience (typically in heavy mechanics). Ability to obtain a CDL.

Associate’s Degree.
Experience:
0‑2 years of progressive work experience (typically in heavy mechanics). Ability to obtain a CDL.
- Available for emergency work call‑backs anytime, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Must report within 30 minutes of call.
- Subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
- Constant use of manual and powered hand tools.
- Daily use of motor vehicles and heavy equipment.
- Occasional exposure to hazardous materials.
- Ability to lift and/or carry 50 pounds independently.
- Ability to stand/sit and operate equipment for long periods.
- Work in adverse environmental conditions.
- Working around high‑speed traffic and heavy construction equipment.
- FLSA:
Non-Exempt. - WYDOT will conduct motor vehicle record checks to verify a valid driver's license.
- This position includes a $100 per month tool allowance. Must provide your own tools.
- Occasional overnight travel is required.
