Under the direction of the Camp Director, the Assistant Camp Director works to support summer day camp operations. The Assistant Director will assist in program preparations prior to school dismissal, in leading daily activities that allow children to learn and play at the same time, explore the community they live in, participate in sports and swimming and develop positive relationships. The Assistant Director models the Y’s leadership core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
Key Responsibilities Leadership- Emphasizes personal safety and emotional well-being with students, parents, and other branch/school personnel at all times. Student safety is a top priority.
- Interprets the quality of YMCA values to students, parents, families and staff. Must be a positive role model. Develops appropriate relationships with all students in their care. Understands, establishes, and abides by appropriate boundaries.
- Plans and implements recreational and educational programs that emphasize group participation with an appropriate amount of choice.
- Uses positive, constructive methods of discipline/positive reinforcement, and ensures that all staff do the same.
- Communicates respectfully, openly and effectively with all staff, parents and children.
- Assists staff during daily tasks to ensure quality programming.
- Manages daily attendance records for groups. Supports with absence calls and confirms group rosters.
- Supports with behavior guidance with students, coaches counselors in effective group management skills.
- Sets an example for group game facilitation and program quality.
- Assists in responsibility of attendance tracking in Boston After School & Beyond.
- Reports all accidents and unusual incidents immediately to appropriate supervisors and completes necessary documentation.
- Communicates program information, problems, and concerns as they occur.
- Assists with planning and implementing of daily activities, special events and Family Night activities.
- Actively participates in all aspects of daily leadership schedule including openings, closings, and extended hours.
- Performs other duties as required by supervisor (remains flexible). Demonstrates a willingness to help where needed and actively seeks to develop oneself. Support with camper file management.
- Support groups in need.
- Attends all staff meetings and training sessions; assists in facilitation. Becomes familiar with training materials and actively incorporates them in their day to day interactions and work with students and staff.
- Maintains and cares for all program areas and supplies. Ensures that students treat all equipment, supplies, and program property responsibly.
- Abides by the established YMCA/EEC/school policies, procedures, regulations, and guidelines and asks when in doubt.
- Must have the physical ability to lead and participate in all physical group games and activities.
- Works in a busy indoor environment; leads outside activities as well.
- May be expected to be in the water during all swim periods.
- Must be at least 18 years of age and have a passion for working with and nurturing children.
- Must have high school diploma or equivalent; college degree or pursuing a college degree preferred.
