Job Description

SUMMARY: The Birch Meadow Elementary School is seeking a dynamic educator to teach upper elementary. The educator is responsible for all aspects of teaching a classroom of students across all core academic content areas, creating a flexible elementary grade program, and establishing a classroom environment that is favorable to learning and personal growth. The instructor will establish effective rapport with pupils, motivate them to develop the skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for elementary education, and build strong relationships with parents and other staff members.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Teach district-approved curriculum.
  • Instruct pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter as specified in state law.
  • Plan a program of study that meets individual student needs, interests and abilities.
  • Create an environment for learning through functional displays, interest centers, and exhibits of student work.
  • Establish and maintain positive pupil-teacher relationships.
  • Set standards of pupil behavior to achieve an effective learning atmosphere.
  • Participate in curriculum planning and set relevant student performance objectives.
  • Provide clear lesson objectives and help students develop individual learning goals.
  • Develop instructional materials, activities, and lesson plans with appropriate modifications and accommodations.
  • Evaluate student progress against goals, record achievement, and adjust learning activities accordingly.
  • Identify student needs, make referrals, and develop strategies for individualized education plans.
  • Assist pupils in academic, personal and social issues.
  • Collaborate with guidance specialists, staff members, parents and community agencies.
  • Work with parents to guide children's development.
  • Coordinate the work of paraprofessionals, parents and volunteers.
  • Demonstrate understanding of Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and Common Core State Standards.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development related to student population and certification areas.
  • Communicate regularly with parents via newsletters, notes, phone calls and conferences.
  • Be available to students and parents outside instructional hours as needed.
  • Use and maintain physical facilities, equipment and supplies responsibly.
  • Assist in operating the school as a cooperative and constructive community.
  • Integrate technology to enhance student comprehension and interest.
  • Maintain awareness of district-wide program philosophies and principles.
  • Follow state and federal special education regulations, the IDEA, and related statutes.
  • Follow all standards and indicators in the Reading Public Schools Teacher Assessment Process (TAP).
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervise the classroom and students, directing the work of and assisting with supervision of paraprofessionals.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The Superintendent may waive or modify the qualification requirements.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Apply current educational research and theory.
  • Plan and implement lessons based on district and school objectives.
  • Communicate clearly in oral and written form.
  • Present information and respond to questions from staff, parents and the public.
  • Read, analyze and interpret professional periodicals, technical procedures and governmental regulations.
  • Write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.
  • Use reasoning to evaluate information and recommend appropriate courses of action.
  • Define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
  • Use professional literature and evidence-based research for practice decisions.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, staff and the community.
  • Work independently, prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects.
  • Use instructional technology appropriately and facilitate student use of technology.
  • Perform duties in accordance with district requirements, state and federal laws, and Board of Education policies.
  • Understand confidentiality requirements regarding student records.
  • Exercise professional judgment in emergency situations.
  • Plan, coordinate and participate in professional and staff development.
  • Operate a computer and related software, including Microsoft Office Suite.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Minimum of a baccalaureate degree; master’s degree preferred.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

Must possess valid Massachusetts teacher licensure appropriate for the subject area to be taught.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
