Job Summary

The Special Education Teacher is responsible for helping students learn subject matter and skills, in accordance with Special Education Laws, to support their educational development based on each student's cognitive learning abilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Teach district‑approved curriculum.
  • Develop instructional materials, activities, and lesson plans with appropriate modifications and accommodations for individual students.
  • Establish and maintain a classroom environment that promotes effective learning and sets behavior standards.
  • Create engaging displays and interest centers showcasing student work.
  • Evaluate students’ academic and social growth, keep accurate records, and prepare progress reports.
  • Identify student needs, make referrals, and develop and implement Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
  • Plan curriculum goals and student performance objectives.
  • Help students develop individual learning goals.
  • Assess progress toward goals, record achievements, and adjust activities accordingly.
  • Collaborate with parents to support student growth and development.
  • Apply knowledge of student disabilities and Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and Common Core State Standards.
  • Adapt curriculum frameworks as needed.
  • Integrate technology into instruction to enhance comprehension and interest.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development related to the student population and certification areas.
  • Provide physical support to students when necessary, including behavior prevention, blocking, escorts, restraints, and medical positioning.
  • Communicate regularly with parents via newsletters, notes, phone calls, and conferences.
  • Be available to students and parents outside instructional hours for education‑related matters.
  • Work with specialists, related service providers, staff, parents, and agencies to assist students.
  • Plan and coordinate the work of paraprofessionals, parents, and volunteers in the classroom and on field trips.
  • Use physical facilities, equipment, and supplies efficiently and responsibly.
  • Maintain understanding of district‑wide program philosophies and principles.
  • Follow state and federal special education regulations, including IDEA and the requirements of 603 CMR 28.00, M.G.L. c. 71B, 20 U.S.C. §1400 et seq., and 34 CFR §300 et seq.
  • Adhere to all standards and indicators described in the Reading Public Schools Teacher Assessment Process (TAP).
Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervise the classroom, students, paraprofessionals, and parent volunteers.

  • Work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple projects.
  • Use instructional technology appropriately and facilitate student use.
  • Perform duties with awareness of district, state, and federal laws and Board policies.
  • Maintain confidential records in special education procedures.
  • Respond professionally to unpredictable situations.
  • Plan and conduct professional development.
  • Operate computer and related software, including Microsoft Office Suite.
