Non-Credit Phlebotomy Program Instructor

Position Summary

The Non-Credit Phlebotomy Instructor is a part-time instructor responsible for teaching all aspects of the phlebotomy training program at Lehigh Carbon Community College. The primary responsibility is to deliver engaging and effective classroom lectures and laboratory instruction, ensuring students develop the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed as entry-level phlebotomists. This role involves comprehensive curriculum delivery, hands‑on skills training, student assessment, and fostering a professional and supportive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities

Instruction:

  • Deliver comprehensive instruction on the theory and practice of phlebotomy, including venipuncture, capillary collection, and specimen handling.
  • This includes teaching relevant anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, and basic laboratory procedures.

Skills Training:

  • Supervise and guide students during hands‑on practice in a lab setting.
  • Demonstrate and ensure students master proper techniques for blood collection, patient identification, infection control, and safety protocols.

Curriculum Management:

  • Implement and adapt the college’s approved curriculum to meet student learning outcomes and industry standards. Ensure course content aligns with the requirements for national phlebotomy certification exams (e.g., NHA or ASCP).

Student Assessment:

  • Evaluate student competency through a variety of methods, including practical skills assessments, quizzes, and exams.
  • Provide constructive feedback to help students improve their technique and understanding.

  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized classroom and lab environment.
  • Uphold professional and ethical standards, and model positive and professional patient interaction skills for students.

Administration:

  • Maintain accurate student records, including attendance, grades, and progress.

Student Support:

  • Provide academic support and guidance to students.
  • Foster a positive learning atmosphere that helps students build confidence and address any anxieties related to performing blood draws.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Experience:

    A minimum of two (2) recent, hands‑on clinical experience as a phlebotomist or in a related healthcare role (e.g., Medical Assistant, RN, LPN).
  • Certification:
    Current and valid phlebotomy certification from a nationally recognized organization such as the National Health career Association (NHA), American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), or American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT).
  • Education:

    High school diploma or equivalent is required; an associate degree or higher in a healthcare-related field is often preferred.
  • Skills:

    Strong communication, instructional, and classroom management skills. The ability to teach and motivate adult learners with varying skill levels is crucial.
  • Background Clearances:
    Must be able to obtain and maintain current PA State Police Criminal Record Check, FBI Background Check, and PA Child Abuse History Clearance.

Preferred:

  • Experience in adult education or workforce training.
  • Familiarity with non‑credit or continuing education systems.
