Communications Instructor (Part-Time)

Alvernia University invites applications for a part-time adjunct instructor to teach undergraduate Communication courses in Reading, Pennsylvania. This position requires in-person instruction on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the upcoming fall 2026 academic semester. The COM department is looking for instructors for COM 140:
Media Literacy in the Age of AI and COM 344:
Technical Writing.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Teach assigned sections of COM 140 and/or COM 344.
  • Prepare and deliver engaging, student-centered instruction.
  • Develop and implement course materials and assignments that align with departmental learning outcomes.
  • Assess student learning and provide timely, meaningful feedback.
  • Maintain accurate attendance and grading records.
  • Communicate regularly with students through the University's learning management system.
  • Submit final grades and fulfill all adjunct faculty responsibilities in accordance with University policies.

Courses:

COM 140 – Media Literacy in the Age of AI

This course empowers students to become critical consumers and informed decision-makers in today's media-rich environment. Students analyze how media shapes and influences culture, examine the goals and methods of media industries, explore the positive impact of credible media and the harmful effects of misinformation and disinformation, and develop strategies for evaluating media content in an era increasingly influenced by artificial intelligence.

COM 344 – Technical Writing

This course prepares students to communicate technical and specialized information clearly, accurately, and effectively for diverse audiences. Students produce a variety of workplace documents—including technical reports, proposals, instructions, manuals, and professional correspondence—while emphasizing audience analysis, document design, research, revision, usability, and ethical communication.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Communication, English, Technical Communication, Rhetoric and Composition, Media Studies, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication.
  • Ability to teach in person on the Reading, PA campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience teaching technical writing at the college level.
  • Previous undergraduate teaching experience.
  • Experience teaching media literacy, digital communication, or related communication courses.
  • Familiarity with Canvas or other learning management systems.
  • Professional experience in communication, writing, journalism, media, or a related field is a plus.

Appointment:

This is a part-time adjunct faculty appointment. Teaching assignments are contingent upon enrollment and departmental needs.
