Overview

The Corrections Counselor 1 position with the Department of Corrections (DOC) offers a meaningful way to support positive change at the State Correctional Institution (SCI) s role focuses on providing counseling, guidance, and case management to inmates as they adjust to the correctional environment and work toward future goals.

• Inmate Counseling: Conduct interviews, address adjustment issues, and guide inmates in resolving personal and family concerns.
• Case Management: Maintain records, prepare reports, and communicate with staff, families, and agencies regarding inmate progress.
• Assessment Review: Analyze aptitude and interest tests, compile socio-demographic histories, and determine programming needs based on assessment results.
• Treatment Planning: Coordinate goals, programming, and activities that support behavioral change and positive adjustment.
• Parole Preparation: Assist with re-entry planning, secure needed documents, and prepare reports for parole review.

• Full-time employment, 40 hours per week.
• Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday – Friday, with a 30‑minute lunch.
• This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.
• Telework: The position does not allow telework.
• Salary: New employees begin at an annual salary of $55,436.00 before taxes.

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

• Three years and six months as a corrections officer, and 18 college credits in sociology, counseling, psychology, social work, corrections, criminal justice or a related field; or
• A bachelor’s degree including 18 college credits in the same fields; or
• An equivalent combination of experience and training that includes 18 college credits in those fields.
• Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.

• You must obtain Commonwealth Law Enforcement Assistance Network (CLEAN) and Pennsylvania Justice Network (JNET) certification within two months of employment and maintain certification for the duration of employment.

• Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.
• You must meet the PA residency requirement.
• You must be able to perform essential job functions.

• You must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.
