This position supports efforts to protect public health and the environment by helping enforce the Pennsylvania Sewage Facilities Act. It combines hands‑on fieldwork, technical review and community interaction to support clean water goals. As an Environmental Trainee, you will perform the following duties:
- Review Plans: Analyze sewage planning modules, policies, and regulations to determine compliance and recommend actions.
- Conduct Assessments: Visit sites to evaluate on‑lot and stream discharge systems and gather field information.
- Support Compliance: Examine work performed by sewage enforcement officers and provide feedback on performance.
- Prepare Analyses: Create technical summaries and documentation that support program decisions.
- Engage Communities: Interact with officials and residents to explain program requirements and address concerns.
- Full‑time employment.
- Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday–Friday, with a 30‑minute lunch.
- Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home part‑time, up to two days per week. Telework requires a securely configured high‑speed internet connection and an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you cannot telework, you may report to the headquarters office in Wilkes Barre. Telework ability is subject to change. Additional details may be provided during the interview.
- Salary: In some cases the starting salary may be non‑negotiable.

- Four years of technical experience in environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental health, geology, biology, ecology, or a closely related field; or a bachelor’s degree in the same field; or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
- Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements within three months of graduating with a qualifying degree.
- Possession of an active motor vehicle license.
- You must meet the PA residency requirement.
- You must be able to perform essential job functions.
