SummaryThe Biomedical Device Integration (BMDI) Analyst is responsible for analyzing, designing, implementing, and supporting the integration of medical devices into clinical systems, including Epic. The BMDI Analyst ensures seamless data flow between bedside medical devices and clinical documentation systems, supporting efficient workflows and improving the accuracy of patient care data. This role combines technical expertise with a strong understanding of clinical environments and workflows, and acts as a bridge between clinical, IT, and biomedical engineering teams.
Responsibilities- Analyze clinical workflow and device data requirements to support device integration strategies and projects.
- Serve as the subject matter expert for medical device data mapping, integration rules, and configuration within middleware platforms (e.g., Capsule, iSirona, Cerner Care Aware).
- Translate clinical and technical requirements into BMDI design specifications and implementation plans.
- Collaborate with IT, clinical engineering, and EHR analysts to ensure accurate integration of devices with the appropriate patient records and units.
- Configure and validate medical device interfaces, including HL7 message routing, device-to-bed mappings, and data field matching.
- Perform gap analysis between device output and clinical documentation needs, recommending appropriate solutions or workflows.
- Support and maintain existing BMDI infrastructure, ensuring system uptime, data integrity, and timely resolution of integration issues.
- Participate in testing, change control, validation, and go-live activities related to device integration.
- Document workflows, configuration settings, integration rules, and support procedures.
- Monitor real-time data transmissions and troubleshoot issues related to device connectivity, interface performance, or data mismatches.
- Assist in compliance efforts related to HIPAA, patient safety, and cybersecurity standards in medical device integration.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Technology, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Nursing Informatics, or a related field required.
- Master’s degree preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience:
- 3+ years of experience in clinical systems analysis, healthcare IT, biomedical device integration, or related roles.
- Strong knowledge of EHR systems (e.g., Epic, Cerner) and integration engines (e.g., Mirth, Rhapsody).
- Experience with medical device middleware platforms such as Capsule, iSirona, or Cerner Care Aware preferred.
- Familiarity with HL7 messaging standards, FHIR, TCP/IP networking, and device communication protocols.
Certifications (preferred but not required):
- Epic Bridges or Clinical Device Integration (CDI) certification
- CBET (Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician)
- PMP or other project management credentials
- Vendor-specific certifications (e.g., Capsule Tech, iSirona)
Skills:
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to effectively communicate with both technical and clinical stakeholders.
- Proficiency in writing clear technical documentation and workflow diagrams.
- Understanding of hospital IT environments, clinical workflows, and patient safety standards.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced healthcare setting.
Working Conditions:
- Requires work in clinical settings, patient care areas, and equipment rooms.
- May require lifting or moving equipment up to 50 lbs.
- Occasional after-hours or weekend work for maintenance, upgrades, or go-lives
