A Brief Overview

Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) is seeking a dedicated and skilled Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner to join our Emergency Department (ED) team. This position will be around a 50/50 split between our King of Prussia Hospital location and Main Hospital. This is an exciting opportunity to practice at one of the nation’s top children’s hospitals.

Role Summary

As a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner in the ED, you will play a critical role in delivering high-quality, evidence-based care to acutely ill and injured pediatric patients. You will work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment alongside a multidisciplinary team of emergency medicine physicians, nurses, and specialists to assess, diagnose, and treat patients ranging from infants to young adults.

What you will do
  • Assess the complex acute, critical and chronically ill patient for urgent and emergent conditions. Use relevant data to evaluate for physiologic instability. Utilize the data to formulate a plan of care.
  • Perform therapeutic interventions to stabilize acute and critical health problems. Specific interventions are listed in the Scope of Practice Document and approved as part of the credentialing/privileging process.
  • Analyze the indications, contraindications, risk of complications and cost-benefits of therapeutic interventions.
  • Manage the plan of care through evaluation, modification and documentation according to the patient’s response to therapy. Manage changes in condition with a focus on optimizing the patient outcomes.
  • Incorporate health promotion, health protection and injury prevention measures into the plan of care within the context of the complex acute, critical and chronic illness.
  • Facilitate the patient’s transitions between and within health care settings.
  • Serve as an educational resource to the patient/family, nursing staff, and provider team. Act as a consultant to multidisciplinary health care team members.
  • Participate in scholarly activities including research and education. Maintain required competencies, identify learning needs and seek appropriate educational offerings. Participate in the professional development of others. Act as a preceptor and mentor to support the development of nurses, nurse practitioners, students, and other health care providers.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to patient safety by speaking up about safety issues and changing practice to enhance safety. Share errors or potential errors through system reporting mechanisms. Demonstrate shared accountability for safe practice.
Education Qualifications
  • Physician Assistant:
    Bachelor’s Degree (Required) or Master’s Degree (Preferred)
  • Nursing:
    Master’s Degree (Required) or Doctorate (Preferred)
Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to work in an inter-professional team setting with multiple responsibilities.
  • Proficient with computer and electronic medical records.
  • Basic use of Microsoft Office.
  • Basic use of patient-facing technology (e.g., IV pumps, point of care devices, CR monitors).
  • Navigation of the electronic health record system and use of clinical decision support tools.
  • Information literacy: determining needed information, accessing it efficiently, evaluating sources critically, and incorporating into clinical practice.
  • Ability to collect clinical data using quality improvement tools.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Certified Physician Assistant (PA-C) in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, or nationally (Required upon hire).
