A Brief Overview

The Lead Lactation Clinical Coordinator supports the day-to-day operations for the lactation and mothers' milk bank programs including; timely access to wellness and rental equipment for families and staff, support of inpatient human milk inventory, monitoring of pasteurized donor human milk and inventory, accurate data entry to ensure optimal management of rental equipment and reporting for the milk bank. Collaborates with the healthcare team, maintains efficient workflow, and performs administrative tasks to ensure quality outcomes and patient care.

The role requires a combination of clinical knowledge and organizational skills. Adheres to regulatory standards, departmental and hospital policies and procedures in the execution of assigned duties. Maintains and models CHOP values and service standards in the execution of all assigned duties.

What you will do
  • Patient Care
  • Educates patients, families and staff on breast pump usage, supplies, and cleaning, human milk storage and transport.
  • Refers for inpatient/outpatient lactation consultation follow-up as needed.
  • Human Milk Banking
  • Is knowledgeable regarding and adheres to Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA) standards
  • Screens and collects data of human milk donors
  • Sorts and slates raw donor human milk with attention to expiration dates and deferrals for medication
  • Coordinates scheduling of daily pasteurization in collaboration with milk bank leadership
  • Follows aseptic technique in the process of pasteurization and adheres to good manufacturing practices as determined by the FDA
  • Monitors inventory and ensures optimal par levels based on operational standards
  • Maintains distribution data that is pertinent to recalls and participates in annual mock recall
  • Follows best practice and departmental standards regarding the storage and safe transport of human milk
  • Human Milk Inventory and Rental Program Management
  • Manages human milk inventory and maintains freezer report collaboration with nursing
  • Supports families in coordinating safe transportation of human milk
  • Responsible for reunification of human milk with discharged patients
  • Employee Wellness and Rental Program Management
  • Manages rental equipment for Lactation Services
  • Manages "stock and bill" pump equipment inventory
  • Coordinates loaner breast pumps for employees
  • Maintains process for the safe return to distribution by properly cleaning all equipment
  • Business Functions

  • Participates in ongoing quality assurance and performance improvement activities as requested.
  • Maintains productivity, screening and other documentation of activities as requested.

    Education Qualifications
  • Associate's Degree Nutrition or related field Required
  • Bachelor's Degree Nutrition or related field Preferred
    Experience Qualifications
  • At least one (1) year Hospital based nutrition, lactation or community WIC program Required or
  • At least one (1) year Human milk banking or other related program Required or
  • At least one (1) year Enteral feeding preparation Required or
  • At least one (1) year food service experience within a hospital Required
  • Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing to patients and families, public, medical staff and physicians. (Required proficiency)
  • Must be able to read English with understanding and write English legibly. (Required proficiency)
  • Basic knowledge and application of medical nutrition therapy in pediatric patients. (Required proficiency)
  • Basic knowledge of nutrient analysis, word processing, and spreadsheet software. (Required proficiency)
  • Ability to perform increasingly complex mathematical calculations such as fractions, percentages, ratios, proportions and metric measures. (Required proficiency)
