The Corrections Utility Plant Operator at the State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Fayette plays a key role in keeping vital systems running smoothly. This position focuses on operating and caring for the facility boiler plant and related equipment while supporting an inmate work crew. The role ensures that heating, cooling, and plant systems function safely and effectively. As a Corrections Utility Plant Operator, you will perform the following duties:
- System Oversight: Monitor heating and cooling equipment during routine and emergency conditions
- Equipment Care: Perform maintenance, clean machinery, and complete basic repairs to support proper operation
- Auxiliary Operation: Operate pumps, fans, control systems, and other supporting equipment
- Water Testing: Check boiler water chemistry and maintain logs of testing and chemical supplies
- Inmate Supervision: Guide inmate workers, check movement, and maintain safe and secure work practices
- Communication Duties: Report concerns to supervisors and complete daily paperwork and inventories
- Full-time employment, 40 hours per week
- Work hours are 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM, with Friday and Saturday or Sunday and Monday as off days.
- Shift differential of $1.25 per hour
- This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.
- Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
- Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $47,925.00 (before taxes). However, a higher salary may be established in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement.

- Three years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of a steam or hot water generating plant, or a steam and electric generating plant;
- or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
- Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.
- You must be able to perform essential job functions.
- You must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.
