Social Media & Cultural Storytelling Intern

The Social Media Intern is a hands-on, creative role supporting Diaspora DNA Story Center’s storytelling, digital presence, and community engagement. Reporting to the Founder & President (and working closely with program and partnerships leads), the intern will help execute content across social media, email, and web platforms while gaining real-world experience in cultural communications, archives-based storytelling, and nonprofit brand-building.

This position is ideal for a student or emerging professional interested in arts, culture, storytelling, ancestry, social justice, and community-centered communications.

• Content Creation & Digital Storytelling (65%)
• Assist in creating, publishing, and maintaining content across Diaspora DNA’s platforms, including social media, email newsletters, and website updates.
• Support social media content creation, including photography, short-form video, captions, reels, and story posts—especially during events, workshops, and public programs.
• Help capture and organize photos, videos, quotes, and stories from programs, interviews, and community engagements. (Requires attending programs throughout Philadelphia.)
• Assist with basic video editing and content formatting for social media and web use.
• Support the maintenance of a shared digital asset library (photos, videos, graphics, copy).
• Ensure content aligns with Diaspora DNA’s brand voice, values, and visual identity.
• Support basic tracking of content performance (engagement, reach, opens, clicks) across social media and email platforms.
• Assist with compiling simple monthly or project-based reports to help the team understand what content resonates with audiences.
• Learn how storytelling and communications support fundraising, partnerships, and community participation.
• Work collaboratively with the DDSC team to identify storytelling opportunities across programs, archives, ancestry work, and events.
• Assist with content scheduling and coordination around program timelines and campaigns.
• Provide light administrative or production support for communications-related projects as needed.
• Attend weekly team meetings (virtual) to ensure alignment and enable collaboration
• Special Projects (5%)
• Support special storytelling or documentation projects, such as oral history clips, festival coverage, or archival storytelling initiatives.

• Current undergraduate or graduate student, recent graduate, or emerging creative professional.
• Interest in communications, marketing, journalism, media arts, cultural studies, history, or related fields.
• Some experience with social media content creation (personal, academic, or organizational).
• Strong written communication skills and attention to detail.
• Interest in photography, videography, or digital storytelling (professional-level experience not required).
• Familiarity with tools such as Canva, Google Workspace, and social media platforms; willingness to learn new tools.
• Organized, reliable, and able to manage multiple small tasks.
• Curious, collaborative, and eager to learn in a mission-driven environment.
• Passion for cultural preservation, storytelling, diaspora studies, and community-based work.

This is an intern role and a great opportunity for anyone interested in creating social media for nonprofits. This is a hands-on role that allows the intern to learn by doing and sharpen their skills.
