Position Overview
The Sanitarian Trainee role with the Department of Environmental Protection provides an opportunity to make a real impact on community health. This position supports the safety of public drinking water while helping you build valuable technical skills. You will grow your expertise through hands‑on field work and supportive training. Responsibilities- Conduct inspections of public water systems and review data to ensure operations follow state drinking water standards.
- Evaluate water system records, plans, and equipment to confirm safe practices are in use.
- Provide information to operators, officials, and the public to support understanding of regulations and water safety issues.
- Collect water samples and verify laboratory results to ensure quality standards are met.
- Identify problems and recommend steps operators must take to correct issues and maintain compliance.
- Full‑time employment.
- Work hours:
8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday‑Friday, with a 30‑minute lunch break. - Requires travel.
- Telework may be available full‑time with a securely configured high‑speed Internet connection and work from an approved Pennsylvania location. Telework eligibility subject to change.
- Salary:
Starting annual salary of $45,907 (before taxes) for new employees.
- Four years of technical experience in environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental health, geology, biology, ecology, or a closely related field; or a bachelor’s degree in one of these fields; or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
- Waiting within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree counts as meeting educational requirement.
- Active motor vehicle license.
- Proof of REAL passport at conditional offer time.
- Must meet Pennsylvania residency requirement.
- Must be able to perform essential job functions.
