Position Overview

General Maintenance Mechanic 2nd Class – 3rd Shift – Cabrini Campus

Villanova University – Villanova, PA

Full‑time, 12‑month position, union (UNION).

Salary: $31.37 an hour plus shift differential. Salary grade: UNION.

Work schedule:

Sun–Thu 11:00 pm–7:30 am.

Responsibilities
  • Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair building systems, equipment, and fixtures in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and design parameters.
  • Inspect buildings, roofs, and mechanical/electrical spaces; perform preventive maintenance tasks for residential and commercial‑type systems.
  • Operate hand, power tools, mobile electronic devices, and diagnostic testing instruments.
  • Read and interpret basic blueprints, sketches, schematics, and wiring diagrams; perform blue‑soldering, silver and lead soldering, pipe fitting, welding, and fabrication as required.
  • Perform carpentry, masonry, painting, plumbing, electrical, heating, and air conditioning work as necessary.
  • Coordinate repairs with other trades, offices, and departments affected by all operations.
  • Assist in furniture and event setups, breakdowns, and decorations for special functions, meetings, etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned within the normal scope of the department’s responsibilities and the individual’s capabilities.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent; documentation of successful completion of formal training classes or programs and acceptable life experience in general maintenance work.
  • Moderate experience in preventive maintenance procedures; meter reading and motor testing; shutdown of gas, water, electrical, and life safety systems (fire alarm, sprinkler, etc.) and steam supplies.
  • Moderate knowledge of building and utilities construction, materials, and inspection techniques for life safety systems, light and power, water systems, refrigeration, elevators, exhaust systems, and air handling units.
  • Basic Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Outlook skills.
  • Personal hand tools required for the trade.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written directions in English; interact professionally with students, faculty, administration, and staff; read and understand NFPA, IBC codes, and OSHA guidelines.
  • Ability to read and interpret basic blueprints, drawings/sketches, schematics, and diagrams.
  • Proactive in keeping all mechanical/electrical spaces clean and clear of foreign combustible materials to comply with risk management inspection requirements.
  • Valid driver’s license required with a good driving record; meet and maintain VU driving privileges as outlined by Villanova Risk Management’s Motor Vehicle Record Policy for Drivers of University Vehicles.
  • Current ANSI / OSHA compliant training card to operate aerial lift, bucket truck, forklift, or all.
  • Ability to erect and work on scaffolding as per OSHA standards.
  • Excellent safety record.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Current OSHA 10 certification or higher; ability to operate aerial/scissor lift, bucket truck, forklift.
Physical Requirements And/or Unusual Work Hours
  • Climb ladders; bend, reach, crawl, and lift up to 60 lbs; work in enclosed spaces.
  • Core hours:
    Sun–Thu 11:00 pm–7:30 am; earlier or later shifts may be expected if emergency repairs are required.

  • 3rd Shift Sun–Thu 11:00 pm–7:30 am; role starts on or after June 1st 2026.
  • Timed 90‑minute 135 multiple‑choice pre‑qualification exam; exam formulas provided. Following exam, a verbal panel‑style interview lasting approximately 1 hour.
  • Must maintain VU driving privileges as outlined by Villanova Risk Management’s Motor Vehicle Record Policy for Drivers of University Vehicles.
