THE POSITION Are you an energetic, enthusiastic, and self‑motivated person with refrigeration or air conditioning mechanic trade experience? The State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Coal Township is looking for a Corrections Refrigeration Mechanic Trade Instructor to provide valuable vocational training to the individuals in our care. This is a rewarding opportunity to assist inmates with a wide range of skills they can use for future employment when they reintegrate into the community.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK As a Corrections Refrigeration Mechanic Trade Instructor, you will maintain an inmate work crew for the purpose of instructing, coaching, and evaluating participants in the trade of refrigeration mechanics. Instruction will be provided through both classroom and on‑the‑job training. Within this role, you will instruct inmates in a variety of trade methods and procedures such as installation, repair, inspection, and maintenance of refrigeration and air conditioning systems and related equipment.
Strong attention to detail is essential, as you will be documenting inmate attendance and training progress, as well as conducting searches to ensure that all materials and tools are accounted for.
- Full‑time employment, 40 hours/week
- Work hours are 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday – Friday.
- This position is eligible for full benefits at age 50 or 55.

Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $51,868.00 (before taxes). - You will receive further communication regarding this position via email. Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
- Five years of experience in the repair and servicing of refrigeration systems or air conditioning systems; or
- Completion of an approved apprenticeship in the refrigeration or air conditioning mechanic trade; or
- An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes one year of journey level work in the refrigeration or air conditioning mechanic trade.
- This position requires possession of an active Universal Refrigerant Transition and Recovery Certificate issued by an approved provider.
- Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.

- You must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.
- Pennsylvania law (51 Pa. C.S. §7103) provides employment preference for qualified veterans for appointment to many state and local government jobs.
