THE POSITION

Are you ready to lead a crew that prioritizes keeping our roadways safe, reliable, and functional for the traveling public? As a Highway Foreman 2 with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), you will take the lead in directing crews who maintain and improve local transportation avenues. This rewarding position gives you the chance to solve problems, organize work plans, and help keep the public safe.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position oversees a general highway maintenance crew and coordinates essential daily work activities. Your responsibilities will focus on planning assignments, training staff, and ensuring safe and efficient roadway operations. As a Highway Foreman 2, you will perform the following duties:

  • Crew Supervision:
    Direct crews using equipment and tools to complete patching, drainage work, shoulder repair, sweeping, litter pickup, and other maintenance tasks
  • Complaint Response:
    Investigate roadway concerns, update road condition records, and recommend work priorities and resource needs
  • Work Training:
    Teach proper equipment use, maintenance procedures, and correct work methods to ensure quality results
  • Safety Oversight:
    Select safe traffic control setups, monitor worksite conditions, encourage safety awareness, and respond to accidents or injuries
  • Staff Management:
    Evaluate performance, approve leave, address problems, provide coaching, and support training needs for crew members
  • Environmental Compliance:
    Carry out environmental practices required in maintenance manuals and support the Strategic Environmental Management Program

Work Schedule and Additional Information
  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Travel and overtime may be required.
  • Dual shifts in effect from November through March.
  • Telework:
    You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary:

    Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $54,162.00 (before taxes).

Required Experience, Training & Eligibility QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Experience and Training Requirements
  • One year of experience as a Highway Foreman 1 (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Two years of experience in the performance of lead work or skilled tradesman duties on a highway maintenance or construction project; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training.
Special Requirement
  • This position requires possession of a valid Class C Pennsylvania Driver's License.
