Position: Laboratory Science (Chemistry) Level 6/Degree Apprenticeship

Job Description

We are committed to developing the next generation of Makers and Bakers. This apprenticeship offers an early career experience in a fast‑paced and ever‑changing environment, enabling you to learn, grow, and step outside your comfort zone.

Who are we looking for?

We want highly motivated people with a real passion for science and a determined attitude to learning. No prior experience is required—we’ll provide all the training you need. You should be able to work well in a team as well as independently and have excellent communication skills.

What will you do?

The Laboratory Scientist role is a 4‑year programme that balances work with learning. You will work toward a BSc Chemical Science degree with Manchester Metropolitan University. Study will occur once a week online, with a residential week once a year. For the first 24 months you’ll rotate through different departments to learn their specialisms, then join a specific department to further develop your skills.

You may use 20% of your time for studies—one day a week or saved for revision and exams.

Where will you be based and when will you start?

You will be based at one of our four sites:
Reading Science Centre, JJT and Knight Building (University of Reading campus), or a location in Wokingham. Interviews begin May 2026, and the apprenticeship starts September 2026.

What benefits will you get?
  • Competitive salary and annual bonus based on performance
  • 35 days annual leave (including bank holidays)
  • Access to world‑class scientific equipment
  • Opportunity to work with and learn from highly qualified scientists
  • Eligible for an NUS Extra card providing discounts at many high‑street and online shops
  • Contributory pension and flexible benefits programme
  • Access to employee health and well‑being programmes
Entry Criteria
  • 104 UCAS points at A‑Level (grade BCC), including chemistry or an equivalent scientific discipline.
  • Minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grades 9‑5, including Science, Maths and English Language.
  • Apply and be accepted into the university course after an offer has been made by RSSL.

Applicants who do not meet these requirements but have relevant workplace experience or equivalent qualifications (e.g. T‑levels or BTEC diploma/extended diploma in a scientific discipline) will also be evaluated.

Travel Requirements / Work Schedule

Travel to the university site during block release and for other agreed activities may be required.

Final date to receive applications

We recommend applying as soon as possible. We will close this vacancy once we have sufficient applications.
