Role Description

The Tool Fitter role at Carney Construction is a full‑time, on‑site position based in Reading. The Tool Fitter is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and servicing a variety of construction tools and small plant equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation on site. Day‑to‑day tasks include inspecting tools for defects, performing routine preventative maintenance, diagnosing mechanical and electrical faults, and completing accurate service records.

The role also involves organising tool storage, managing inventory, coordinating the delivery and collection of tools, and supporting site teams with correct tool usage guidance. The Tool Fitter will work closely with supervisors and site operatives to minimise downtime and ensure compliance with health and safety standards.

Full UK driving license

Qualifications
  • Experience in tool fitting, mechanical maintenance, or small plant repair, ideally within construction or civil engineering environments.
  • Working knowledge of hand tools, power tools, and small machinery commonly used on construction sites, including safe operation and maintenance.
  • Ability to diagnose faults and carry out repairs using appropriate tools, manuals, and technical information.
  • Understanding of relevant health and safety regulations, including safe handling, storage, and inspection of tools and equipment.
  • Strong organisational skills for managing tool inventories, service schedules, and maintenance records.
  • Effective communication skills to liaise with site teams, suppliers, and supervisors, and to provide clear guidance on equipment use.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritise tasks, and respond promptly to equipment issues in a busy site environment.
  • Prior experience in a civil engineering or construction contractor setting is an advantage.
  • Relevant vocational qualification or apprenticeship in mechanical engineering, tool fitting, or plant maintenance is beneficial.
  • Full, valid driver’s licence is preferred to assist with tool collection and delivery between sites.
