Position: Early Literacy Specialist I/II - Extra Help

Under general supervision, promotes community awareness and education of early literacy education for children and families; plans, organizes, and conducts early literacy programs; prepares materials for outreach in English and Spanish. Considers how early literacy program participation results in engaging with community resources including early intervention/prevention services provided by First 5 Tehama Partners.

The Early Literacy Specialist I/II Extra Help position is a maximum of 1,000 hours a year (averaging 18–22 hours per week) TBD. Position is located in Red Bluff California with the following salary range:

Hourly: $25.60 – $31.12 Early Literacy Specialist I
Hourly: $28.26 – $34.35 Early Literacy Specialist II
Extra Help positions do not qualify for benefits

Position Information

As stewards of Proposition 10 tobacco tax funding, First 5 Tehama aims to invest in efforts that will have the most effective and positive impact on young children and our community. Under supervision from the Executive Director, the Early Literacy Specialist is responsible for promoting community awareness and education of early literacy for children and families in Spanish and English as well as planning, organizing and conducting early literacy programs and events throughout Tehama County.

As part of a team of professionals and partners, this position plays a vital role in the achievement of First 5 Tehama’s vision of all Tehama families thriving and being hopeful and resilient by accessing the resources they need.

Positions in this classification series are flexibly staffed. This is a multi-level professional classification series in which incumbents may be assigned to either of the two levels, depending upon experience, proficiency gained, and the complexity of assigned functions. An incumbent at the Early Literacy Specialist I level may be promoted to the Early Literacy Specialist II level when work knowledge has been developed, sound work habits demonstrated, and requirements have been met.

Duties
  • Plans, organizes, and conducts community early literacy programs and workshops, using evidence-based interventions for children and families to promote all language and literacy development.
  • Pre exhibits, brochures, flyers, posters and other materials for presentation to the public for the purpose of promoting early literacy programs and increasing participation of children and families.
  • Receives public inquiries regarding early literacy programs and other early education resources supporting health and education; provides information and referrals to appropriate health service providers and/or other agencies.
  • Applies knowledge of early literacy best practices to support bilingual language development for at‑risk populations, including planning, facilitating, and hosting group-based family engagement and learning activities.
  • Under Manager’s guidance, plans and hosts training in early literacy practices to early care providers, and school personnel, etc.
  • Actively develops partnerships with community organizations and neighborhood leaders to increase family participation in early literacy initiatives.
  • Represents First 5 Tehama and its programs at professional, community and agency meetings and functions.
Education
  • Early Literacy Specialist I:
    Graduation from an accredited 2‑year college or university with an Associate’s degree in Early Education, Behavioral Science, or Human Development related field including early childhood units in curriculum, early learning and child development.
  • Early Literacy Specialist II:
    Graduation from an accredited 4‑year college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Early Education, Behavioral Science, or Human Development related field including early childhood units in curriculum, early learning and child development.
  • Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Special Requirements
  • Bilingual and biliterate in English and Spanish.
  • Possession of a valid California driver’s license and proof of current automobile insurance coverage.
  • Employee will be expected to use their own vehicle for travel within Tehama County and surrounding region.
