HIRING BONUS
The City of Red Bluff offers a tiered hiring bonus to candidates that successfully complete the hiring process with a contract remaining in place requiring a four-year commitment to the Red Bluff Police Department.
Bonus Tiers- 1 year of experience will receive $10,000
- 2-4 years of experience will receive $20,000
- 5-6 years of experience will receive $30,000
- 7+ years of experience will receive $40,000
Payment of the bonus in four installments:
- Upon hire.
- Upon successful completion of the field training program.
- Upon successful completion of probation (12 months).
- Upon completion of 24 months of service.
* The top salary range listed is contingent upon qualifying for certain incentives including educational, POST certification and longevity, which is transferable as a POST certified peace officer from other agencies.
Works under the general direction of the Police Captain who is the Operations Division Commander. Is responsible to be the “Watch Commander” in the absence of the Police Captain and other Administrative Staff (Chief & Lieutenant).
Supervision ExercisedProvides supervision of sworn and non-sworn personnel including but not limited to, police corporals, police officers, community service officers, dispatchers, records specialists, volunteers and inmates assigned to work release programs. The Police Sergeant may serve as the Watch Commander in the absence of the Police Captain.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Provide immediate first‑line supervision for personnel on a designated Watch. Must exhibit leadership skills, maintain discipline and ensure that all rules and regulations are followed.
- Handle calls for service and perform aspects of police work as needed to maintain public safety.
- Assist the Police Captain in planning, coordinating, and directing the activities of personnel.
- Provide counseling and training as required. Ensure that goals, watch priorities, effective schedules and methods of providing services are established and policies and procedures are utilized as necessary.
- Perform special projects and ensure that problem‑oriented, community‑oriented policing projects or programs are utilized. Document, organize, and complete projects in a timely fashion.
- Assist the Police Captain in developing goals, objectives, and priorities for the watch.
- Review and approve police reports and other documents submitted by police personnel. Ensure they are accurate, thorough, completed on time and meet department standards.
- Accept and resolve citizen complaints where possible. Document citizen complaints per policy and forward as required. Provide feedback and follow‑up. Respond to inquiries from the public, press, or outside agencies with appropriate public relations skills.
- Conduct roll‑call briefings and/or training during a designated Watch with concise, effective communication.
- Monitor personnel equipment usage and maintain accurate records of department equipment. Ensure personnel receive necessary equipment and report lost/damaged items promptly.
- Proactively enforce laws, rules and regulations, and conduct supervisory duties to reduce crime and calls for service.
- Supervise personnel work in cooperation with those assigned to the Dispatch Center.
- Sergeants may be periodically assigned to the Operations Division and/or the Support/Special Services Division.
- Sergeants may be assigned collateral duties such as Internal Affairs Investigations, Background Investigations, Range Master, Use of Force Instructor, SWAT Team Leader, Traffic Supervisor, policy review & development, equipment acquisitions & replacement.
- Sergeants may be required to wear various uniforms depending on assignment.
- Use software/computer systems and mobile devices to maintain operations.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Police car, police radio, radar gun, handgun, taser, baton, handcuffs, breathalyzer, protective duty vest, first aid kit, mobile smartphone, computer/laptop, printer/copier, fax machine, and other standard office equipment.

Regularly required to talk, hear, stand, use hands for handling, reach, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, walk, sit, lift up to 10/25/50 pounds, possibly carry/drag over 150 pounds, wrestle and restrain subjects. Often required to run, jump, push, pull, physically apprehend and subdue suspects.
Specific vision abilities: close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception. Must speak and understand clearly, read and compose reports, operate firearms (handgun, shotgun, rifle), and operate a police vehicle under normal and emergency conditions including high speeds in adverse conditions.
