Duties
Help
As a Fish Biologist your duties will include but are not limited to the following:
- Performing scientific investigations on anadromous fish (Chinook Salmon, steelhead, lamprey, and sturgeon) and their habitats in Northern California, particularly focused on flow and temperature management, watershed restoration, mitigation and fish passage. Experience with juvenile fish monitoring and research projects, conservation biology, and sampling of Threatened and Endangered Species under Endangered Species Act permit restrictions.
- Performing fishery data base management and skillfully conducting quantitative/statistical analyses of fish monitoring and research data, including data compilation, relational database structure, and statistical data analysis, including coding and use of statistical software (e.g., R, Python, Visual Basic) to develop and maintain biological databases, synthesize and analyze data.
- Preparing written correspondence, reports, and papers for publication, based on accurate collection of data, observations made, and investigations conducted. Reports and papers are used to analyze current conditions and assess implications of future actions on threatened and endangered anadromous fish species.
- Supervising or leading a team of personnel, including planning and prioritizing work duties, and scheduling, evaluating, recruiting, and hiring personnel.

F. - Suitability for employment, as determined by background investigation.
- Driver's License:
This position requires the incumbent to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of their official duties. Selectee must hold and maintain a valid state driver's license throughout their employment in this position. - Must annually pass the PADI open water swim test, and achieve Swift Water Rescue Tech 1 within 3 months of employment.
- Uniform:
Official U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service uniform is required. - A condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a [1-year probationary period OR 2-year trial period] during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated.
- Individuals assigned male at birth after 12-31-59 must be registered for the Selective Service. To verify registration visit SSS.gov.
Only experience and education obtained by 06/29/2026 will be considered.
In order to qualify for this position you must possess both the Basic Requirement and Minimum Qualification.
