Position SummaryThe Lube Technician performs preventative maintenance, lubrication, servicing, inspections, and minor repairs on school buses and other Transportation vehicles. The position supports the safe, reliable, and serviceable operation of the fleet and works with Journeyman Mechanics, Lead Journeyman Mechanics, and other shop staff. Work is performed within the employee's training, experience, and ability. Repairs requiring advanced diagnosis or technical expertise are referred to a Journeyman or Lead Journeyman Mechanic.
Key Responsibilities Preventive Maintenance- Perform scheduled lubrication, servicing, oil and filter changes, seasonal maintenance, and other preventative maintenance.
- Check applicable fluid levels, excluding brake fluid which is inspection only.
- Inspect belts, hoses, fittings, accessible components, and identify leaks, wear, or damage.
- Assist with annual inspections and fleet preparation.
- Perform minor repairs within training and ability, including lights, bulbs, LED assemblies, fuses, wipers, mirrors, mud flaps, reflectors, safety markings, minor body hardware, handles, latches, hinges, interior and seat components, hoses, clamps, fittings, batteries, and similar items.
- Perform basic electrical repairs and headlight aiming when properly trained.
- Refer major mechanical, brake, steering, suspension, engine, transmission, and complex electrical repairs to a Journeyman or Lead Journeyman Mechanic.
- Inspect vehicles for tire and wheel condition, leaks, belts and hoses, lighting, windshield and wipers, mirrors, brakes, steering and suspension, doors and emergency exits, seats and interior, body damage, warning lights, and other safety concerns.
- Check and inflate tires, inspect for damage or abnormal wear, and assist with tire changes and wheel removal/installation.
- Report deficiencies requiring further diagnosis or repair and do not independently diagnose major mechanical problems.
- Assist mechanics with repairs, maintenance, component removal and installation, bus preparation, annual inspections, seasonal preparation, special projects, and other shop activities.
- Retrieve parts, tools, and equipment and move vehicles within the yard.
- Assist with bus rescues and roadside service when properly trained.
- Clean and maintain shop areas and equipment.
- Complete work orders and record mileage, maintenance performed, repairs, deficiencies, parts, fluids, filters, and materials used. Enter required information into the fleet/work-order system (Fleet Soft).
- Complete assigned work safely, accurately, and on schedule.
- Work within established training and ability and request assistance when required.
- Identify and report vehicle problems and stop work when an unsafe condition is identified.
- Properly care for vehicles, tools, equipment, and materials.
- Maintain reliable attendance and punctuality.
Follow Transportation Shop safety procedures, applicable Occupational Health and Safety requirements, and required PPE practices. Properly secure vehicles and use hoists, jacks, tire equipment, and other shop equipment only when trained and authorized. Report unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, and vehicle safety concerns. Properly handle fluids, chemicals, and waste and maintain clean, hazard-free work areas.
Tools and EquipmentUse lubrication and fluid recovery equipment, air compressors, tire equipment, hand and power tools, battery equipment, basic electrical testing equipment, hoists and lifting equipment, wash-bay equipment, inspection equipment, and computerized fleet/work-order systems.
Qualifications- Grade 12 or equivalent preferred.
- Valid driver's licence appropriate to the position and acceptable driver's abstract.
- Mechanical aptitude and interest in vehicle maintenance.
- Vehicle, truck, heavy‑duty, automotive, tire, commercial vehicle, or fleet maintenance experience preferred or considered an asset.
- Ability to safely use common hand and power tools and follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to identify and report vehicle problems and work independently and cooperatively as part of a shop team.
