Public Health Educator

This Public Health Educator will build a youth led, school-based substance use prevention program. As Youth Prevention Specialist, this GCHHS public health educator will partner closely with the Red Wing High School (RWHS) and Tower View Alternative School (TVAS) in Red Wing. They will work to recruit a paid team of students, and provide training, support and mentoring to the student team.
This full-time position is funded through December 2028 by grants from the Goodhue County Opioid Settlement Advisory Committee and the Minnesota Department of Health, and the project could be extended and/or expanded if additional funding is secured.
Examples of Work:
- Recruit a team of students in grades 8-12 to lead substance use prevention work.
- Partner with schools to empower and support youth to design, deliver, and evaluate prevention activities and outreach.
- Collaborate with Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC) staff on prevention, screenings and supportive interventions.
- Engage youth most impacted by substance-use through relationship building with trusted messengers.
- Guide youth in evidence-based approaches and peer/community education efforts.
- Contribute to grant requirements through data collection, documentation, and reporting.
Minimum Qualifications
- Baccalaureate in community health, health education, or related field and one year of experience working with community-based initiatives or collaboration with multiple groups in the area of health prevention/promotion.
- Graduate degree in community health, public health, or related field may substitute for experience.
- Must have a valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience (paid or unpaid) leading, teaching, and/or managing programs for youth strongly preferred OR
- Experience designing, developing, delivering, and/or evaluating educational programs for youth preferred
Compensation/Benefits
County employees receive competitive pay and a generous benefit offering. The Public Health Educator is compensated at salary grade 112 ($73,860.80 - $) and starting annual compensation is $73,860.80. This position is full-time 40 hours/week, year-round with anticipated start date between October 15, 2026– December 15, 2026 (approximate) with generous vacation (12 days/year) and sick leave (12 days/year).
