Patient Care Type: This unit is a bridged unit with a HEPA air filtration system, designed to protect immunosuppressed patients from airborne infections. Nurses provide care for patients undergoing autologous or allogeneic bone marrow transplants and peripheral stem cell infusions. Patients may be hospitalized during various stages of their wellness/illness from initial diagnosis through active treatment, recovery, or through end of life.
As part of the Mayo Cancer Center, the unit participates in individual and group cancer research programs.
Bed #: 19. Pod A is comprised of six inpatient private rooms, one outpatient double room, and four private outpatient rooms. Two outpatient exam rooms are also off the unit in the main corridor. Pod B is comprised of eight private inpatient rooms. Two of the rooms are set up for isolation with ante rooms. Room 9-420 has the capability of reversing the air flow of the room to negative pressure.
Nursing Team Roles: Nurses working on the unit have additional education to provide services including apheresis/marrow harvest preparatory regimens, chemotherapy, blood transfusions, intensive supportive therapies for immunocompromised patients, stem cell and marrow infusions. Emotional support and patient/family teaching are important care components of these often acutely ill patients. Mayo Nursing Care Model is the model used for care delivery. Patients are followed as a hospital-based outpatient on our unit, prior to transplant and after transplant.
For New Graduate Nurses: Please apply through the Nurse Residency Program posting, which is specifically designed to support new graduate RNs.
