MnDOT District 6 may fill up to 3 Transportation Generalist vacancies at the Red Wing Truck Station. Winter hours are Monday – Friday, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM; or a snow and ice shift, 12:00 PM – 12:00 AM (A shift) or 12:00 AM – 12:00 PM (B shift). During snow & ice operations employees are split into an A and B shift and will receive 8‑hours of work or more depending on the length of the event.
Hours may include overtime or various shifts depending on emergency situations and will include working nights, weekends and holidays. Incumbents must have immediate access to a phone and be able to report to work within one‑hour of being called. Summer hours are to be determined.
Road Surface/Roadway Maintenance
- Perform all activities required for roadside maintenance
- Perform all roadway surface maintenance activities
- Service and make minor repairs to operating equipment
- Provide traffic control
- Perform basic construction monitoring duties and basic inspection activities
- Other duties as required
Snow and Ice
- Maintain roadways for snow and ice control
- Prepare and inspect winter equipment
- Perform preseason snow route inspection and post‑storm cleanup
- Perform winter stockpile setup and transfer of anti‑icing and de‑icing chemicals
- Perform all work related to installing, repairing, maintaining, and removing snow fences; replace mailboxes
- Maintain documentation on snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management
- Perform traffic control set‑ups or provide notification to dispatch of disabled vehicles

Exam Part 1:
The level of experience to perform this job at the Transportation Generalist level can be achieved with:
- One year of experience performing activities in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs or related activities (roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, landscaping, operating heavy equipment or farm experience)
AND
- Must possess a Class B Commercial Driver’s License with no Air Brake Restriction and obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License with no Air Brake Restriction and Tanker Endorsement within 5‑months of placement into the position. The incumbent will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. New employees must pass a pre‑placement drug test for evidence of use of marijuana, cocaine, opiates, phencyclidine (PCP) and amphetamines (MDMA, MDA and MDEA) and acetylmorphine (6‑AM).
