Job Summary

The current vacancy is in the Shasta County Health and Human Services Agency Administration Branch. Oral exam is tentatively scheduled for June 2026. See special requirements regarding possession of a valid driver’s license and responses to supplemental questions. Final filing date:
June 12, 2026, at 12:00 PM.

Salary

Accountant Auditor I: $4,457 – $5,690 approximate monthly / $25.72 – $32.83 approximate hourly.
Accountant Auditor II: $5,160 – $6,587 approximate monthly / $29.77 – $38.01 approximate hourly.

Responsibilities
  • Accountant Auditor I
    • Perform professional duties in the coordination and oversight of various accounting and auditing activities.
    • Maintain accuracy of general, revenue, and expenditure ledgers and subsidiary financial systems.
    • Assist in annual budget preparation and monitor budget activities.
    • Prepare and review monthly, periodic, and annual financial, accounting, budgetary, and statistical studies and reports.
    • Check posting and audits, analyze transactions, and prepare journal entries.
    • Provide staff assistance to the fiscal manager.
    • Interpret budget policies; advise superiors; recommend solutions.
    • Develop and improve agency accounting procedures and methods.
    • Perform related work as required, including special reports and studies.
  • Accountant Auditor II
    • Perform professional duties and coordinate and oversee various accounting and auditing activities.
    • Maintain accuracy of general, revenue, and expenditure ledgers.
    • Provide or coordinate staff training.
    • Analyze and audit accounting records, financial statements, and other records of county departments and special districts.
    • Prepare working papers, reports, and financial statements.
    • Consult with department heads, government officials, and business organizations on auditing and fiscal policy, practice, and methods.
    • Develop and improve accounting systems and procedures.
    • Supervise a small unit of technical or clerical staff, as appropriate.
    • Assist in year‑end closing of fiscal and accounting records.
    • Prepare the county’s cost allocation plan and compile departmental budgets.
    • Perform related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Accountant Auditor I
    • Graduation from college majoring in accounting or a closely related field, with at least 15 semester units in accounting, management accounting, and business law.
    • OR two years of experience equivalent to an Accounting Technician with Shasta County and at least 15 semester units.
    • OR professional‑level accounting or auditing experience that satisfies the required standards on a year‑for‑year basis.
    • OR a bachelor’s degree with major coursework in accounting, finance, or a closely related field; a CPA license may substitute for the required education.
    • OR completion of 60 semester or 90 quarter units, with 15 semester units in accounting plus two years of full‑time experience comparable to an Accounting Technician.
  • Accountant Auditor II
    • One year of experience equivalent to an Accountant Auditor I with Shasta County.
    • OR a bachelor’s degree with major coursework in accounting, finance, or a related field plus one year of professional‑level experience; a CPA may substitute.
    • OR 60 semester or 90 quarter units, with 15 semester units in accounting plus two years of professional‑level experience.
Ideal Candidate

Knowledge of governmental accounting policies, procedures, and regulations; familiarity with federal and state requirements; experience in fund accounting, cost allocation, budget preparation and monitoring; ability to work in a fast‑paced environment, meet multiple deadlines, and multi‑task.

Special Requirements

Some positions may require possession of a valid California driver’s license. Employees who drive on county business must possess a valid license and meet the county’s automobile insurability requirements.
