Description Of Basic Functions And Responsibilities

Under administrative leadership, part‑time college instructors teach classes and participate in continuous improvement of instruction, student success, and the district vision, mission, and values.
Typical Duties, Knowledge and AbilitySuccessful applicants will demonstrate they are broadly prepared and have depth of knowledge in the discipline. They will also demonstrate the following:
- Ability to work effectively and harmoniously with colleagues in an environment that promotes innovation, teaching, learning, and service to a diverse student population.
- Ability to effectively work with students with a wide range of skills, motivations, academic, and vocational goals.
- Ability to design and deliver courses, including those offered in different modalities (in‑person, online, hybrid).
- Ability to participate in recruitment and articulation activities with local schools, colleges and universities.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain subject‑matter currency.
- Ability to assess student learning outcomes.
- Knowledge of and willingness to explore new technologies and teaching practices that benefit students and programs.
- Experience indicating sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
- Knowledge of and commitment to the California community‑college mission.
- Meet classes/laboratories as assigned.
- Develop and implement instruction for each class and laboratory period in line with the course outline and district guidelines.
- For online and hybrid courses, maintain course components and deliver content as required.
- Provide regular student‑student and student‑instructor contact.
- During the first week, develop and distribute a syllabus outlining course description, objectives, grading, testing, attendance, and other requirements.
- Provide regular, timely feedback to students and return graded work promptly.
- Assign final grades for courses per district policy, administrative procedures, California Education Code, and Title 5.
- Respect student rights as specified in district policy and applicable laws.
- Submit requisitions for textbooks and instructional materials in a timely manner.
- Refer students to tutoring and related student services when appropriate.
- Supervise students in off‑campus activities when required.
- Provide academic assistance during scheduled office hours.
- Participate in professional development to remain current in the discipline.
- Submit required administrative paperwork, including student learning outcomes, accurately and on time.
- Complete discipline‑specific classroom responsibilities as assigned.
- Participate in the evaluation process described in the faculty collective bargaining agreement.
- Continue to develop professional skills and remain current in subject‑matter knowledge.
- Keep and submit official records required by district policy.
- Abide by district policies concerning district property and safety.
- Report absences due to illness or personal necessity to the supervising administrator.
- Recommend purchases of instructional supplies and equipment as needed.
- Fulfill all obligations established in the current collective bargaining agreement.
- Schedule and maintain clear office‑hour days and times for all classes.
- Participate in participatory governance through district committees.
- Participate in curriculum review and develop new courses in response to student or community needs.
- Participate in program review and annual planning within established cycles.
- Attend and participate in department and division meetings.
- Assess learning outcomes and participate in learning‑outcome processes.
- Participate in required professional development activities that improve pedagogy.
