Salary Information

Deputy Probation Officer I

$4,659–$5,947 monthly ($26.88–$34.31 hourly).

Deputy Probation Officer II

$5,136–$6,556 monthly ($29.63–$37.83 hourly).

About the Department

The Probation Department delivers services and supervision, accountability, rehabilitation, and support for youth and adult offenders, including pre‑sentence investigations, case planning, and court reporting.

About the Position

Under general supervision, investigate, assess, and manage cases involving adult or juvenile offenders; prepare reports and make recommendations to courts; monitor compliance with probation conditions; promote rehabilitation through prevention services, supervision, guidance, and accountability.

Special Note

Applicants must pass a background investigation before hiring.

Written Examination

Applicants meeting minimum qualifications will be invited to a written examination conducted monthly. The exam is developed by the California Board of State and Community Corrections.

Duties – Deputy Probation Officer I
  • Conduct pre‑sentence case investigations.
  • Interview offenders and others with information about the offender or offense.
  • Prepare court recommendations for sentencing, probation conditions, and rehabilitative programs.
  • Maintain supervision of probationers.
  • Ensure compliance with release terms and assist in social adjustment.
  • Make court appearances and recommend case disposition.
  • Collaborate with other agencies in mutual‑interest cases.
  • Prepare and maintain case records and reports.
  • Perform delinquency prevention, intervention, compliance checks, home searches.
  • Conduct surveillance operations and physical arrests.
  • Participate in multi‑agency law enforcement efforts.
Duties – Deputy Probation Officer II
  • Conduct pre‑court case investigations and interviews.
  • Prepare court reports and recommend conditions and rehabilitation programs.
  • Explain probation conditions to probationers and families.
  • Maintain contact to promote social adjustment.
  • Appear in court and recommend disposition.
  • Collaborate with agencies and supervisors.
  • Prepare and maintain case records and reports.
  • Recommend dismissal or revocation of probation based on compliance.
  • Perform delinquency prevention, intervention, and monitoring.
  • Coordinate home visits, searches, and work with local agencies.
  • Consult and prepare comprehensive reports.
Knowledge and Ability – Deputy Probation Officer I
  • Knowledge of casework theories, applied psychology, evidence‑based practices, interviewing, and writing.
  • Ability to learn modern probation practices, court procedures, state laws, and county ordinances.
  • Ability to manage caseloads, administer assessments, create referrals and reports.
  • Effective communication, judgment, and professionalism.
  • Maintain accurate records and cooperative relationships.
Knowledge and Ability – Deputy Probation Officer II
  • Knowledge of adult and juvenile probation practices, court procedures, federal, state, and local laws, evidence‑based practices, crime prevention, interviewing, and counseling.
  • Ability to manage complex caseloads, interpret court orders, exercise skilled judgment, and create referrals and detailed reports.
  • Effective communication, organization, prioritization, and professional relationships.
Minimum Qualifications – Deputy Probation Officer I
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university OR current enrollment in an accredited college or university with 90–100 semester units in good standing.
Minimum Qualifications – Deputy Probation Officer II
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and one year of experience comparable to Deputy Probation Officer I with Shasta County.
Special Requirements
  • Possession of a valid California driver’s license.
  • Individuals with a felony conviction may not apply for peace officer positions.
  • Progression to Deputy Probation Officer II requires successful completion of the probation officer basic core academy within one year of employment.
