Distinguishing Characteristics:
Code Enforcement Officer I:
This class is the entry level into the Code Enforcement Officer series and incumbents are initially assigned routine investigations or well-defined segments of complex investigations. As experience and training progresses, incumbents are assigned increasingly complex work. Initially, work is performed under close supervision, which lessens as experience is gained. This class differs from the next higher class of Code Enforcement Officer II in that the II level is the journey level class in the series.

Incumbents are expected to promote to a II level after gaining the appropriate knowledge through training, obtaining the required certifications, and demonstrating proficiency of duties.

Code Enforcement Officer II:
Code Enforcement Officer II is the journey level position in the Code Enforcement Officer series. Code Enforcement Officer II works independently, with general supervision, has higher scope of responsibility and latitude of judgement, and performs the more complex investigations involving a multiplicity of codes. The II level requires a working knowledge of county zoning, building, housing and health codes, including those related to CEQA, and in the monitoring of mitigation measures of private projects.

This class is distinguished from preceding class of Code Enforcement Officer I in that the I level is an entry level position. This class differs from the next higher class of Code Enforcement Officer III in that the III level is the lead level class that handles the more detailed and complex cases and assists with supervision and training of lower-level staff.

Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate will possess strong research, investigative, and written and verbal communication skills. They will demonstrate professionalism and sound judgment when working with the public and be committed to achieving voluntary compliance through education, collaboration, and effective de-escalation techniques. The successful candidate will have a working knowledge of County zoning, building, housing, and…
