About Shasta ScoutShasta Scout is a nonprofit, independent newsroom dedicated to producing rigorous, community-centered journalism for and about Shasta County and the greater North State region.
Our innovative online news service strengthens democracy by providing access to trustworthy information in a way that deepens and empowers engagement with the news, our neighbors, and people in power. We investigate issues that matter, amplify underrepresented voices, and foster civic participation by ensuring residents have the information they need to make informed decisions and build a stronger community.
Shasta Scout is an emerging team with three full-time employees and one part-time staffer. We provide news as a service across a rural region of far northern California where many community members currently lack access to trustworthy information. Shasta Scout’s funding comes from a combination of reader donations, grants from news ecosystem funders, collaborations with other organizations and gifts from large donors.
This year that revenue is funding a budget of about $450,000 which facilitates publication on our website, via two newsletters and shared on a variety of social media with plans to launch a print edition this year. In all, Shasta Scout currently reaches an audience of about 20,000 each month.
The Revenue Development Manager will play a vital role in sustaining and growing Shasta Scout’s mission-driven journalism.
In this position, you will work with the executive director to design and operate organizational strategy that creates impact-aligned revenue growth. You will build and grow a variety of revenue initiatives and community partnerships to ensure diverse and sustainable revenue streams. You will also design and support operational and distribution initiatives that strengthen the organization’s long-term financial sustainability. Approximately 85% of the role focuses on revenue generation and development, with the remaining 15% devoted to distribution and operations.
Key Responsibilities- Build on strategies that maintain and grow current revenue streams including memberships, large donors, collaborations and grants
- Develop and implement strategies that lead to the launch of new revenue streams including ads, print publishing, public service announcements and notices
- Develop and grow relationships with current and potential partners across a variety of funding sectors and geographical locations including those who are local, regional and national
- Develop and deploy mission-aligned messaging and materials that facilitate strategic communication with partners and potential partners
- Build and manage a comprehensive database of partners and potential partners across known and anticipated revenue streams
- Meet monthly revenue goals for existing revenue streams
- Meet quarterly goals for initiating new development projects
- Track and adapt Shasta Scout’s fundraising goals and gap‑closing strategy quarterly, in collaboration with the director
- Collaborate with the director to cultivate major donors.
- Identify grant opportunities and support grant proposal development and submission.
- Collaborate with the director to secure collaboration opportunities including shared reporter roles with other organizations or publications
- Oversee membership campaigns and fulfillment.
- Create and maintain sales and sponsorship materials, including policies, rate sheets, partner proposals, contracts and acknowledgment language.
- Build and manage the sales process with the help of a contracted local sales person. Ensure successful campaign outcomes and renewals to meet metrics.
- Develop state funding connections and develop a plan to access revenue by meeting public service needs.
- Research, identify and implement the means to develop and maintain a regular print edition, including dedicated revenue streams and specifics of operational needs.
