Overview

Description of Basic Functions and Responsibilities

The Assistant Director of Physical Plant reports to the Director of Physical Plant and assists with the day‑to‑day supervision of the District’s maintenance, grounds, warehouse, custodial, printing, and transportation operations. Employees in this classification operate with minimal supervision within a broad framework of policies and procedures.

Classification

Range 30 on the Administrative Confidential Salary Schedule, 40 hours per week, 12 months per year.

Work hours:

8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Supervisor:
Director of Physical Plant or designee.

Typical Duties, Knowledge and Ability
  • Provides oversight and direction to the Physical Plant Department and staff in the absence of the Director.
  • Manages the daily operations of the Physical Plant Department.
  • Assists in establishing, implementing, and maintaining procedures and standards for maintenance, grounds, warehousing, delivery, custodial, printing, and transportation operations.
  • Participates in hiring committees, onboarding and training, assigns duties and schedules, supervises, and evaluates Physical Plant personnel.
  • Directs the work of skilled tradespeople, approving and assigning work orders, reviewing completion, and following up on issues.
  • Ensures campus buildings, grounds, and transportation equipment are regularly inspected for sanitation, safety, and maintenance requirements.
  • Verifies compliance of work projects with departmental standards and building safety codes.
  • Represents the District internally and externally to community partners, governmental agencies, and the public.
  • Assists in developing the Department’s strategic plan and reviewing operational performance to recommend service improvements.
  • Prepares, administers, and monitors department budgets.
  • In-depth knowledge of at least one major area or applied trade supervised in the Physical Plant Department.
  • Broad knowledge of overall physical plant operations including grounds, transportation, custodial, and skilled trades.
  • Understanding of applicable state, local building, safety, and health codes and regulations.
  • Familiarity with equipment, tools, techniques, and methods used in building construction trades (carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing, air conditioning).
  • Basic computer operations, including e‑mail and Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to analyze problems, identify alternatives, and implement solutions.
  • Exercise independent judgment and make sound decisions under stressful conditions.
  • Train, schedule, supervise, coordinate, and evaluate others’ work.
  • Prepare and manage multifaceted department budgets.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Learn from errors, determine corrective action, and prevent recurrence.
  • Promote teamwork and shared accountability within the Physical Plant Department and with external college departments.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others from diverse backgrounds.
Experience / Education
  • Two years of experience supervising a physical plant department such as transportation, custodial, or grounds; or five years of experience in a skilled trade such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, or air conditioning with experience as a lead or foreperson.
