Description:
The stepdown unit provides care for patients transitioning from intensive care. It operates with a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:3 for closer monitoring. Registered Nurses are expected to have prior experience in a stepdown or ICU setting. Training includes telemetry and management of high-risk medications. The unit consists of 14 beds across 7 rooms. Common patient diagnoses include TBI, trauma, major surgery, CEA, and sepsis.
RNs are required to titrate drips as part of care. Common titratable medications include precedex, dopamine, dobutamine, and levophed. The unit is generally supported by a nursing aid for all beds. Shifts are structured as 12-hour shifts starting at 6:45 AM or PM. Three shifts per week are expected, with schedules prepared 2-3 weeks in advance. Self-scheduling is primarily utilized to accommodate staff preferences.
Weekend requirements include working 4 weekend shifts in a 4-week schedule. Holidays are incorporated into permanent staff rotation expectations. There is no call or standby requirement for this position. RNs may be required to float to tele or med-surg units when necessary. The dress code consists of navy blue scrubs. Travelers are welcomed and should possess self-motivation and team-oriented skills.
The unit promotes effective teamwork and prioritizes patient experience. Familiarity with HCAHPS and core measures is appreciated. Candidates must be committed to the mission and values of the unit. Cancellations may occur, allowing for up to 4 shifts to be canceled during assignments. Charting is performed using the Cerner system. A BSN is not required for this role. COVID vaccination certification is required.
