Basic PurposeThe purpose of this position is to assist in the daily operations of a thrift store retail outlet, including customer service, cash handling, and stocking. Thrift store clerks will also be trained for the sorter position and interchange as needed. Primary responsibility is to create and maintain a friendly, inviting, clean, and professional atmosphere that encourages customers to return.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Cash handling opening and closing procedures.
- Operate the cash register/POS system.
- Provide great customer service with a friendly, polite, and helpful attitude.
- Keep clothing racks stocked, neat, and orderly.
- Stock household items, miscellaneous items, shoes, purses, belts, hats, books.
- Maintain clean and orderly aisles and shelves.
- Participate in general store housekeeping (vacuuming, sweeping, general cleaning).
- Remove merchandise according to policy.
- Process merchandise/donations upon request and help accept donations.
- Other assigned duties.
Customer Service
- Ensure every customer is properly greeted and acknowledged.
- Assist customers in locating items.
- Direct customers regarding items available for donation.
- Acknowledge customers for their patronage.
- Treat employees in a friendly and enthusiastic manner.
- Diplomatically handle customer complaints and concerns while maintaining Salvation Army standards for quality and customer relations.
Personnel
- Assist the Director of Production & Retail or Corps Officer(s).
- Interview new applicants.
- Conduct annual performance reviews and evaluations.
- Maintain written records of employee incidents and performance feedback.
- Report disciplinary matters up to termination.
- Orient and train new personnel.
- Schedule work schedules for personnel.
- Check timecard submissions for accuracy.
- Instruction and supervision of employees and volunteers assigned to the thrift store according to TSA policy and procedures.
- Enforce dress code.
- Supervise employees from community work programs and volunteers.
- Supervise truck drivers’ activities in the store, ensuring schedules and proper handling of merchandise.
Merchandise Management
- Monitor and control quality and preferences of merchandise for customer demographics.
- Effectively display all store merchandise on clothing racks, furniture, glassware, etc.
- Maintain fully stocked and balanced inventory on floor racks and stock room; fully stocked defined as 1" between hangers with no empty spaces.
- Coordinate daily markdown and pulling procedures according to guidelines set by the administration.
- Adjust markdown times within guidelines to meet fluctuations in inventory volume; ensure inventory is not pulled until adequate backup stock is available.
- Coordinate specials with the processing department according to administration guidelines.
Requirements
- Education:
GED or High School Graduate. - Skills:
Accurate cash handling and counting, knowledge of current clothing trends and styles, merchandising skills, strong customer service skills. - Must stay busy on the work floor; each clerk assigned specific areas for stocking, cleanliness, and fatigue management.
- Familiar with The Salvation Army Western Territory Handbook for Employees.
- Attend scheduled employee meetings; full compensation for meeting days.
- Lifts up to 25 lbs occasionally up to 35 lbs with help.
- 90% of the time standing, lifting, bending, walking, and reaching.
Education:
High School or Equivalent (required)
Experience:
1 year Management (preferred); 3 years Retail Management (preferred)
