Arborist/ Tree Surgeon
The successful candidate, working under general supervision, will prune, shape, and remove trees and vegetation using hand tools, power tools, and other equipment; operate aerial devices; and work safely from elevated platforms.
- Operate aerial devices, brush chippers, and work from elevated platforms.
- Trim, shape and remove trees, including tree trimming in close proximity to high voltage power lines, using gas, hydraulic and power chain saws, rope rigging, other hand tools and equipment.
- Clear and remove limbs, branches, and vegetation in close proximity to high and low voltage power lines, poles and transformers
- Hang banners and other special projects for City departments requiring an aerial device.
- Clean, sharpen and maintain tools and equipment.
- May be called to duty outside regular work hours for both scheduled and emergency work.
- Will be required, on occasion, to climb trees to remove vegetation and prune trees.
- Apply Tree Growth Regulators (TGR's).
- Modern tree trimming methods and safety practices.
- Interact effectively with the public and other employees.
- Skillfully operate an aerial device;
- Operate gas and hydraulic powered saws, trimmers, and edgers;
- Operate chipper and stump removal equipment;
- Work effectively in precarious positions at heights significantly above the ground;
- Perform tree rescue;
- Perform moderate and heavy physical labor, including lifting in excess of 50 pounds.
- Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying; typical education would include a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Typical experience would include two years of line clearance tree trimming experience.
- Must meet Cal/OSHA Title 8 requirements for line clearance tree trimming (18 months experience). Must currently possess and maintain certification as a "Certified Arborist" issued by the International Society of Arboriculture. Possession of the appropriate California driver's license, or the ability to acquire one within ten days of appointment.
- Must be able to enter and work in confined spaces, participate in the Confined Space Program, and perform confined space rescue.
The examination process may include a written examination, practical exercise, oral board interview, or any combination thereof. This recruitment will establish an eligibility list and may be used to fill current and future vacancies.
Selection Process:- Positive past employment references
- Review of a driver history record
- Passing a city paid fingerprint criminal conviction check (applicants 18 or older)
- Passing of a pre-employment medical exam and drug and alcohol screening test
Applicants who attach a copy of the DD-214 to their application indicating 'Honorable Discharge' from military service and receive a passing score on the examination process will have two (2) additional points added to their final examination score.
