Position: Lifeguard I

Under supervision of the Pool Manager, lifeguards perform a variety of duties related to supervising the pool, decks, and additional areas of the aquatic facility to ensure patron safety by safeguarding users of the facility and rescuing individuals who get into difficulty in the swimming pool. May also be a Swim Instructor (see job description).

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Conduct self in professional manner.
  • Maintain constant surveillance as assigned to safeguard swimmers from drowning and other accidents.
  • Maintain discipline and orderly conduct among patrons and enforce all pertinent City pool rules and regulations.
  • Assist and respond when the facility’s Emergency Action Plan is activated.
  • Promote and enforce water safety procedures; perform swimming rescues; render first aid and CPR as required.
  • Assist in the planning, promoting, and organizing of prescribed programs and special events.
  • Clean and maintain the aquatic facility and perform pool maintenance functions as required.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other city employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate and up-to-date records and reports.
  • Assist the Pool Manager when required.
  • Inform the Pool Manager when equipment is damaged, or supplies are low.
  • Lead birthday party games with groups of up to 20 children.
  • May assist with Parks and Recreation programs as assigned.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Required
  • No prior experience required but prior exposure to working with children and the public is desired.
  • Completion of tenth (10th) grade or 15 years of age.
Licenses and Certifications
  • American Red Cross Lifeguarding with CPR/AED Certificate for Professional Rescuers.
  • American Red Cross First Aid certification.
  • Other training will be provided by the city that may include American Red Cross Title 22 first aid and/or administering emergency oxygen training.

  • Principles and practices of water safety and swimming rescue techniques.
  • Principles and techniques of first aid and CPR.
  • Practices and methods of public relations and customer service; techniques and principles of effective interpersonal communication.
Ability to
  • On a continuous basis, know and understand operations and observe safety rules; walk; swim with proficiency and endurance; render life‑saving measures; interpret policies and procedures; explain operations and problem solve issues for the public and with staff; be versed in all the latest safety standards and information related to aquatics.
  • Be attentive to the pool environment.
  • Prevent accidents and conduct effective rescues.
  • Respond to emergency situations in a calm and effective manner; administer first aid and CPR.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate reports and up‑to‑date records.
  • Understand and carry out written and oral directions.
  • Communicate tactfully with customers.
  • Communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Able to function effectively under direct supervision and to receive direction and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Periodically set up and move tables and carry supplies; remove and replace pool tarps; lift or carry weights of 40 pounds or less.
  • Promote and enforce safety procedures including proper use of equipment.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to remove and replace pool covers.
  • Work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and in temperatures that can exceed 100°.
Skill in
  • Perform CPR for at least 15 minutes.
  • Perform first aid.
  • Perform rescue skills as demonstrated in the Red Cross Lifeguard Manual.
  • Swim 500 yards and tread water for two (2) minutes.
  • Working with children.
