Under the supervision of the Pool Manager, teaches American Red Cross courses to certify participants in Lifeguarding, CPR/AED and First Aid.
Dut may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Conduct self in a professional manner.
- Ensure patron safety and respond if an emergency takes place during class.
- Prepare and maintain accurate records and reports keeping them up to date.
- Lifeguard class planning and instruction.
- Answer questions and inquiries from participants.
- In addition to instructing American Red Cross lifeguard classes, may be required to teach Title 22 first aid and administering emergency oxygen courses.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Experience in working with teenagers and the public is desired.
- Must be at least 18 years of age or have two years’ experience as a lifeguard.
- Have or acquire prior to beginning date of employment an American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certification that is kept current during employment.
- Have or acquire an American Red Cross Lifeguard/CPR/AED/First Aid Certification that is kept current during employment.
- Knowledge of the philosophy, objectives, and requirements to provide a safe environment.
- Principles and practices of water safety and swimming rescue techniques.
- Principles and techniques of first aid and CPR.
- Practices and methods of public relations and customer service; techniques and effective interpersonal communication.
- On a continuous basis, know and understand operations and observe walk; swim with proficiency and endurance; render life‑saving measures; interpret policies and procedures; explain operations and problem solve issues for the staff; be versed in all the latest safety standards and information related to aquatics.
- Ability to be attentive to the pool environment.
- Prevent accidents and conduct effective rescues.
- Respond to emergency situations in a calm and effective manner; administer first aid and CPR.
- Prepare and maintain accurate reports and up-to-date records.
- Understand and carry out written and oral directions.
- Communicate tactfully with customers.
- Communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Able to function effectively under direct supervision and to receive direction and follow written and oral instructions.
- Periodically set up and move tables and carry supplies; lift or carry weights of 40 pounds or lessli>
- Promote and enforce safety procedures including proper use of equipment.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and in temperatures that can exceed 100°.
- Perform CPR for at least 15 minutes.
- Perform first aid.
- Perform rescue skills as demonstrated in the American Red Cross Lifeguard Manual.
- Swim 500 yards and tread water for two (2) minutes.
- Working with teenagers.
