Developed in 1969, the Johnston Center for Integrative Studies is one of the oldest academic living-learning communities in the country and a signature program at the University of Redlands. Students live and learn together in the Johnston dorm, where there are classrooms, creative spaces, a meditation room, a commuter lounge, and a music room. As students in an intentional, consensus-based community, Johnston students work together to use their community budget to bring in speakers, host live music and other events, and support community and academic projects.
Central to Johnston is self-governance, which empowers students to make decisions about how best to live and learn together. Johnston also uses a restorative justice approach to conduct order to restore and repair community harm. Reporting to the Associate Dean of Residence Life, Housing and Student Wellbeing, the Residential Experience Coordinator is a member of the University of Redlands Residence Life and Housing staff who has a responsibility for the direct oversight of the Johnston Center for Integrative Studies' residential community and provides leadership for the expansion of living learning communities within the University of Redlands' overall Residential Experience program.
