Assistant Professor of Chemistry (Bio Chemistry)

The Chemistry Department at the University of Redlands is seeking to hire a tenure-track biochemist at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin August 2027. Primary teaching responsibilities will include a biochemistry course and laboratory, general chemistry lectures and laboratories, and the possibility of organic chemistry lectures and laboratories for the equivalent of 24 units. The successful candidate is expected to develop a productive research program involving undergraduate students.

The research area is open. Collaborations are possible with our neighboring institutions that include LLUMC, UC-Irvine and the Keck Graduate School. Candidates must demonstrate a strong dedication to teaching and mentoring incoming students with diverse backgrounds, including students that may have little to no background in chemistry.

The University of Redlands is an independent, regional, comprehensive university with strong roots in liberal arts education. We are a Hispanic Serving Institution, with 40% of our student body composed of first-generation students and believe that bringing together faculty, students, and staff from diverse cultural and/or socio-economic backgrounds creates a richer learning environment. The Chemistry Department is ACS accredited, serving undergraduate major/minor students in Chemistry & Biochemistry as well as the general education program of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Furthermore, the University of Redlands is committed to providing students with transformative experiential learning opportunities through its Core Four initiative: undergraduate research, community service learning, internships, and study away. We welcome candidates who are enthusiastic about supporting student participation in high-impact practices and integrating experiential learning into their teaching, mentoring, and advising.

A Ph.D. (or near completion of degree) in chemistry or biochemistry is required at the time of appointment. If the Ph.D. is not complete at the time of appointment, the appointed candidate may begin at the rank of instructor and convert to assistant professor upon completion of the degree within a reasonable and agreed upon period of time. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States.

When applying, please upload the following materials:

  • Letter of application
  • Two-page statement of teaching philosophy that includes a description of their approach to teaching students with diverse educational and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Up to a four-page description of research plans

In addition, applicants will send three letters of recommendation e-mailed to the Chair of the search committee, Dr. David Schrum ().

The position is open until filled, with initial review of applications beginning September 14, 2026. The University of Redlands is an Equal Opportunity Employer and encourages applications from underrepresented groups.
