Definition Of Classification
The Department of Political Science at the University of Redlands welcomes applications for the David Boies Endowed Chair in Law and Politics to begin in the Fall 2027 semester. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Political Science or related degree and have an established record of teaching, scholarship, and/or professional academic experience appropriate for appointment at the advanced Assistant or Associate Professor level.
We seek a scholar-teacher with a distinguished record of teaching and scholarship in law and politics. We are especially interested in candidates with demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching and mentoring, a clear commitment to inclusive pedagogy, and an active research agenda. Experience teaching in a liberal arts context within a regional comprehensive university, or clear evidence of readiness to thrive in one, is highly desirable.
Candidates should possess a record of teaching and research accomplishment commensurate with their career stage in one or more areas of law and politics, including:
American or comparative constitutional law, Tribal law, judicial politics, law and courts, public law, civil rights and liberties, legal institutions, or the politics of law and legal processes, broadly construed. We also welcome candidates whose teaching or research engages questions of ethics, justice, rights, legal theory, political theory, or the philosophical foundations of law and politics in ways that could support interdisciplinary collaboration with Philosophy.
We especially welcome applications from scholars who support the Department’s commitment to civic engagement, community-based learning, and experiential education. The successful candidate will contribute to the University of Redlands’ Core Four initiative by helping students engage in high-impact experiences such as internships, undergraduate research, community service learning, and study away. The successful candidate will support the University’s pre-law advising program and co-curricular initiatives such as Mock Trial.
Experience developing internship pipelines or off-campus learning opportunities in legal, governmental, nonprofit, or public service settings is welcome but not required.
The University of Redlands is a Hispanic-Serving Institution located in Southern California’s Inland Empire. With a vibrant Native Students Program, strong student interest in Indigenous Studies, and a diverse student body, inclusive of many first-generation college students, the institution seeks faculty who can ably support these communities. Thus, we strongly encourage applications from candidates whose teaching, research, and service will contribute to institutional and departmental efforts to support diverse communities on-and off- campus.
