Every successful operation starts with reliable equipment—and reliable equipment starts with great mechanics. We're looking for a hands‑on Equipment Mechanic who thrives on solving mechanical challenges, minimizing downtime, and keeping our fleet operating at its best.

Under general direction to perform skilled mechanical repair and preventive maintenance work on automotive and heavy equipment.

Distinguishing Characteristics
  • Equipment Mechanic I: entry level; tasks similar to II but with supervision; training.
  • Equipment Mechanic II
    : full journey; independent; oversight of lower‑level staff. Usually filled by advancement from I after 3 years.
Examples of Duties
  • Perform the full array of mechanical maintenance duties and responsibilities including preventive maintenance and minor and major overhaul of all City vehicles and equipment.
  • Test, inspect, overhaul and repair internal combustion and other mechanical equipment including diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems and components, emergency lighting and warning devices, air conditioning, water pumps, air and hydraulic brakes, suspension and other systems.
  • Diagnose, disassemble, adjust and reassemble equipment.
  • Replace component parts on vehicles and equipment; perform engine tune‑ups, rebuilding and overhauling; perform safety inspections on vehicles and equipment.
  • Analyze vehicle and equipment failures, determine problems and cause, and recommend solutions.
  • Complete a variety of records and documents of work performed.
  • Estimate time, materials, and equipment required for jobs assigned.
  • Clean and wash motorized equipment as necessary.
  • Operate motorized equipment in connection with repairs and servicing.
  • Change and repair tires; balance wheels.
  • Assists on major repairs.
  • Order equipment parts and ensure parts are received timely.
  • Diagnose, overhaul, repair heavy duty equipment and machinery.
  • Troubleshoot air and hydraulic systems on solid waste and other medium to heavy‑duty vehicles.
  • Diagnose and repair steering and suspension components.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Education and Experience
  • Mechanic I:
    High school diploma or equivalent; one year of experience in light, medium and heavy equipment repair.
  • Mechanic II
    :
    High school diploma or equivalent; three years of experience in light, medium and heavy equipment repair.
Licenses and Certificates
  • Valid California driver’s license at the time of appointment.
  • Valid California Commercial driver’s license or ability to obtain and maintain within one year.
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification desirable.
  • Airbrake Certificate desirable.
  • Air Conditioning Certificate desirable.
Special Requirements
  • Physical abilities: sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, twist, climb, and lift 75 pounds.
  • Exposure to outdoors, heat, noise, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, explosive materials, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards.
  • Ability to travel to different sites and locations.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of
    : operating and repair characteristics of a wide variety of light, medium and heavy equipment; occupational hazards; preventive maintenance principles; hydraulic systems; internal combustion engines; welding and fabrication; safe driving practices.
  • Skill to
    : operate a variety of automotive, truck, and heavy equipment and testing equipment.
  • Ability to
    : perform skilled mechanical repair, work independently, diagnose and troubleshoot, read and interpret schematics, understand instructions, communicate clearly, and maintain positive working relationships.
