Public Safety Officer – Full‑Time, Nights (shift 2200 to 0630).

Pay range: $23.74 – $30.39 per hour. Swing Shift Differential: $2.50/hr night Shift Differential: $5.50/hr weekend Differential: $2.00/hr.

Position Overview

The Public Safety Officer ensures the safety of patients, caregivers, and visitors of St. Charles Health System. The officer addresses security incidents, provides secure transport of patients, and enforces the system’s policies and regulations, particularly in behavioral health crisis situations.

Essential Functions and Duties
  • Perform secure transport, assessing the need for restraints and using the least restrictive method possible to secure the patient in a caged vehicle in accordance with Oregon state statutes.
  • Adhere to all provisions of the St.Charles Behavioral Health Code of Ethics, including integrity guidelines.
  • Respond to emergency codes and serve as a security dispatcher, taking calls, coordinating officer movement and priorities, interacting with tracking software, and completing reports.
  • Monitor security cameras and other security systems.
  • Complete timely and accurate reports, including code‑gray debriefs, after‑action reports, and special security reports.
  • Monitor parking and enforce hospital parking rules, escalating all policy violations to security leadership.
  • Serve as a front‑line customer representative, greeting patients and visitors and providing way‑finding services.
  • Conduct real‑time threat assessments and recommend actions upon recognition of any real or perceived threat to the organization, facility, department, or caregiver.
  • Remove all items a patient could use to injure themselves or others.
  • Operate vehicle safely in accordance with all traffic laws while transporting the patient.
  • Render first aid or CPR as appropriate within scope during an emergent situation.
  • Complete required documentation to the standards of all regulatory agencies.
  • Operate metal detector (stationary and handheld) and maintain its use within policy.
  • Inspect buildings regularly to ensure security of entrances, departments, and public areas.
  • Provide professional service and direction to patients and families presenting to St.Charles Health System hospitals for after‑hours care.
  • Lead de‑escalation support as situations require.
  • Coordinate with admitting and nursing staff to ensure all entrances are monitored.
  • Control crowds during a mass casualty or event that brings numerous patients and non‑patients to the hospital.
  • Monitor cameras, secure doors, and respond to alarms related to facility‑related problems, troubleshooting system issues as trained.
  • Follow all safety rules and procedures for work areas.
  • Function as an unlicensed assistive care provider under the direction and supervision of registered nursing.
  • Support the vision, mission, and values of the organization in all respects.
  • Support Lean principles of continuous improvement as a champion of change.
  • Maintain a high‑standard professional and confidential environment for caregivers, patients, and guests.
  • Comply with all applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures, reporting known or suspected violations and cooperating with investigations.
  • Deliver customer service and/or patient care that promotes goodwill, efficiency, and accuracy.
  • Perform additional duties of similar complexity within the organization, as required or assigned.
Education
  • High school graduate or GED equivalent.
  • Must be willing and able to pass and maintain the following classes and/or certifications provided by SCHS:
    • ODOT Safe driver training (4 hours, once)
    • Workplace Violence Prevention Training (8 hours annually)
    • Secure transport training (4 hours annually)
    • Handcuffing Tactics (4 hours annually)
    • Defensive Tactics (8 hours annually)
Licensure / Certification / Registration
  • Obtain DPSST Armed/Unarmed Professional certification within 90 days of hire and maintain throughout employment.
  • AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Code Gray Training upon hire.
  • Valid Oregon driver’s license and meet SCHS driving requirements.
  • Pass all phases of the initial 6–8‑week new officer training curriculum.
