Position: Fleet Services Technician I, II, III

Overview

Recruitment series to fill two open positions within the Fleet Services team in the Public Works Department.

Fleet Service Technician Levels
  • Fleet Technician I: Grade 13 – Monthly Salary $5,287.00 – $6,727.00
  • Fleet Technician II: Grade 14 – Monthly Salary $5,552.00 – $7,064.00
  • Fleet Technician III: Grade 16 – Monthly Salary $6,120.00 – $7,788.00
Essential Job Functions
  • Perform routine tests, services and repairs on vehicles and mechanical equipment.
  • Resolve most situations using established procedures and guidelines, selecting correct solutions from defined alternatives.
  • Carry out preventive maintenance schedules for all vehicles and mechanical equipment, personally or through vendors.
  • Operate diagnostic instruments and hand, electric, and air‑driven tools.
  • Inspect, adjust, and replace units and parts under supervision.
  • Follow approved shop procedures and purchase parts and supplies as needed.
  • Provide emergency field assistance to disabled equipment.
  • Maintain records and use software for Fleet Operations and specialized maintenance records.
  • Operate a motor vehicle to attend maintenance-related issues at various city locations.
  • Operate a variety of vehicles and equipment: automobiles, backhoes, pickup/utility trucks, 12‑yard dump trucks, sweepers, chain/trimming saws, snowplows/blowers, miscellaneous power and hand tools, graders, weed eaters, lawn edgers, loaders, riding and manual lawn mowers, large rotary mowers, and farm tractors.
  • Support utilization of Asset Management for planning, scheduling, and documenting work activities per the Asset Management Plan.
  • Assist with asset management plan development, inventory and condition identification, business risk calculations, net present value and life‑cycle cost determination, and cost‑effective alternatives.
  • Support condition assessment of existing assets to improve fleet planning and budgeting.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Fleet Technician I

Mandatory Requirements

  • High school graduation or equivalent plus at least one year of experience in engine and power‑train repair, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of automotive mechanics, gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, generators, and powertrains.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective preventive maintenance programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to complete assigned projects.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, vendors, and the public.

Desirable Requirements

  • At least two years of experience in engine and power‑train repair, or equivalent combination.
  • First Aid and CPR certification;
    Forklift certification; certifications relevant to repair and maintenance of gas and diesel engines, Police and Fire apparatus.
  • Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities.
  • Knowledge of modern equipment maintenance practices, methods, materials, and tools.
  • Ability to weld and complete light fabrication projects associated with repair and maintenance.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) and EVT (Emergency Vehicle Technician) certifications.
  • The City will support training and education to achieve desired certifications.

Special Requirements

  • Use of City vehicles; valid Oregon driver’s license within thirty days of hire.
  • Valid Oregon CDL license within six months of hire, of the required classification to operate Public Works equipment.
  • Safe driving record.
Fleet Technician II

Mandatory Requirements

  • High school graduation or GED equivalent plus at least three years of experience in engine and power‑train repair, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.

Necessary Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledgeable in basic automotive mechanics, including gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, generators, and powertrains.
  • Ability to perform routine diagnostics and repairs on diesel and gas engines, and to work with hybrid and electric vehicles with guidance.
