Space
X was founded to enable humanity to explore the stars. Space
X is actively developing technologies to make multi-planetary life possible and to enable Starlink, the world’s most advanced broadband internet system.
We are seeking a motivated Electrical-optical Silicon photonics IC engineer to work with cross-disciplinary teams to develop next-generation PIC/EIC for space and ground infrastructures. These chips aim to expand connectivity and performance for the Starlink network.
Responsibilities- Design, simulate and model electro-optical building blocks for a silicon photonics solution
- Design, simulate and model RF/analog/mixed-signal circuits and systems
- Derive specifications for Photonics IC/Electrical IC subsystems and circuits
- Develop Analog/Mixed-Signal/RF/Microwave circuits in SiGe or CMOS processes
- Collaborate with system architects, DSP/electro-optics, and ASIC engineers to partition functions between hardware and software
- Perform IC floor planning and layout
- Model package and external parasitic components
- Evaluate, characterize and measure electrical and optical building blocks of a high-speed optical link solution
- Assist in development of automated test lab equipment for measurements
- Collaborate with manufacturing engineers on production testing and qualification of EIC/PIC components and systems
- Bachelor e2 b s degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or computer science
- 5+ years of photonics or electro-optical integrated circuit design
- Master's degree or PhD in electrical engineering or computer engineering with emphasis in electro-optics integrated circuit design
- Experience with simulation tools such as Spectre, ADS, HFSS or Momentum, Ansys Lumerical, COMSOL
- Photonics design skills and analysis/simulation of optical building blocks (e.g., MZM, Microring modulators, Ge photodiodes, DWDM filters, wave guides, couplers, dividers, polarization management)
- Electrical circuit design skills and analysis of linear and nonlinear circuits (high bandwidth modulator drivers, TIAs, CTLEs, filters, low-noise and power amplifiers)
- Knowledge of advanced packaging technology for optical engine integration in a co-package optics (CPO) solution
- Experience with wideband circuit designs for high-speed Ser Des links (>100 Gbps, BW tens of GHz)
- Familiarity with Ser Des architecture, NRZ and PAM4 modulation, and link protocols
- Familiarity with optical and RF test equipment (spectrum analyzers, vector signal analyzers, vector signal generators, high-speed oscilloscopes, BERTs)
- Experience characterizing EIC/PIC performance for high-speed optical Serdes
- Ability to work long hours and weekends as necessary to support critical milestones
