Lab Engineer, Avionics Development, Amazon Leo
Job | Amazon Kuiper Manufacturing Enterprises LLC
Amazon Leo is Amazon’s low Earth orbit satellite broadband network. Its mission is to deliver fast, reliable internet to customers and communities around the world, and we’ve designed the satellite network with the capacity, flexibility, and performance to serve a wide range of customers, from individual households to schools, hospitals, businesses, government agencies, and other organizations operating in locations without reliable connectivity.
Export Control Requirement:
Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
To deliver on that mission, Amazon is looking for talented candidates who are intellectually curious, have solved complex problems, and have a demonstrated ability to get the right things done quickly and effectively.
In this role, you’ll join Amazon Leo's Avionics Development team as a Lab Engineer. This is an operations facing position focused on avionics lab equipment design, management, build‑out, operation, and maintenance. As a hands‑on lab manager, you will innovate, design, and deploy the building infrastructure and equipment systems that let satellite hardware development teams scale and operate efficiently. You will be the single‑threaded owner for facilities requirements, build‑out, and execution.
You will work hard, have fun, and make history!
This Lab Engineer will require familiarity and expertise on how modern hardware laboratories are designed and operated. There are not many historical references for how to build satellite hardware laboratories that truly scale at the volumes of Amazon Leo’s vision. An ideal candidate can draw inspiration from consumer electronics, battery, automotive, or other high‑tech industries to build the facility that builds the satellite hardware.
Key Job Responsibilities- Coordinate with building designers, architects, and construction firms to design new (or retrofit existing) lab facilities.
- Collaborate with different satellite hardware development teams to collect facility and equipment requirements.
- Operate, maintain, and upgrade complex equipment systems that develop, qualify, and validate satellite hardware prototypes.
- Create standard operating procedures, draft narratives for decision makers, and create operational reports tracking key performance indicators.
- Liaise with suppliers, contractors, and vendors that contribute to the hardware development life cycle.
About the team
You will be a member of the Satellite Avionics Development team working within the wider Electrical Engineering organization. This highly collaborative group of hardware and software engineers has a diverse range of backgrounds and knowledge. We are looking for someone to support and own facilities operations. Our labs enable prototypes that will validate hardware and software systems for next‑generation satellites. We tackle problems that span a variety of domains and everyone on the team needs to be entrepreneurial, wear many hats and work in a highly collaborative environment.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of engineering documentation, electrical diagrams and standard operating procedures.
- 1+ years of hardware development, test lab, space/aerospace maintenance or hands‑on engineering environment experience.
- Experience developing operational processes and technologies.
- Experience in manufacturing, process, or industrial engineering.
- Experience with design & innovation and research & development.
- Experience communicating with users, other technical teams, and management to collect requirements, evaluate alternatives and develop processes and tools as needed to support the organization.
- Experience developing strategies that influence leadership decisions at the organizational level.
- Experience creating process improvement procedures.
